Detaching and attaching refrigerant lines at expansion valve — AUDI
Detaching and attaching refrigerant lines at expansion valve on Audi: 21 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi Q3 (8U, 2011–2018); platform code 84
- Opens: refrigerant (A/C)
- Renewed: o-rings
- Also covered elsewhere: Electronic parts catalogue
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Danger from escaping pressurised refrigerant.Frostbite on skin and other parts of the body.Extract the refrigerant and then immediately open up the refrigerant circuit.Extract the refrigerant again if more than 10 minutes have passed since the initial extraction and the refrigerant circuit has not been opened up. Renewed evaporation leads to the build-up of pressure in the refrigerant circuit. — Vehicles with TDI engine: Detach engine cover panel 10Engine cover panel; Removing and installing engine cover panel.
- Discharge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station). [Note: Depending on the engine and vehicle version, it may be necessary to unfasten or remove the following components: Engine cover panel (top), compressed air pipe to throttle valve unit and intake manifold etc. Engine21Charge air system; Exploded view - charge air system.]
- Remove air pipe (from air cleaner to turbocharger) Engine21Charge air system; Exploded view - charge air system.
- Remove nuts (1) and bolt (2).
- Open retainer (3) and move coolant line (5) clear.
- Detach retainer (4) from threaded pin.
- Prise off wiring retainer (4).
- Open retainer (1) and move coolant line (2) clear.
- Detach heat shield (3).
- If fitted, unscrew nuts (arrows) and detach heat shield (1).
- Remove bolts (3 and 4) and detach refrigerant lines (1 and 2).
- Seal off open lines and connections with clean plugs from engine bung setVAS 6122.
- Renew O-rings; for correct version, refer to Electronic parts catalogue.
- If fitted, check that dowel pin (4) is not damaged and is seated correctly.
- Check guide ring (2) at refrigerant line connection for damage.
- Insert O-ring (3) in groove (arrow) in connection for refrigerant line (1). [Note: Lubricate O-rings lightly with refrigerant oil before fitting .Check refrigerant pipes to evaporator for dirt and damage.Make sure O-rings are seated correctly in groove (arrow) of corresponding refrigerant line. After attaching, check routing of refrigerant lines. They must be inserted in brackets provided and should not make contact with other components.]
- Insert refrigerant lines (1, 2) in corresponding connections at expansion valve.
- Tighten bolts (3 and 4).
- Evacuate and charge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).
- Start up air conditioner after charging refrigerant circuit .
- As a final step, interrogate event memory and erase any entries displayed ("“Guided Fault Finding”").

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
