Valve timing - check — VW
Valve timing - check on VW: 30 steps, 2 torque figures, engines BMD, CHF, CHFA, CHFB. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform codes 6A1, 6A5
Don't miss
- The additional mark (1) of the exhaust camshaft gear, and additional mark (2) of the inlet camshaft gear face each other, with a slight misalignment.
- After concluding activities, ensure that the Locating pin T10340 and Locator T10477 are removed from the engine. — Install engine support plug. Tightening torque = 30 Nm.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) | ⚠ After concluding activities, ensure that the Locating pin and Locator are removed from… |
| 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) | Apply a torque |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Follow the instructions below to prevent severe injuries:With the ignition switched off, disconnect the earth wire from the BatteryAElectrical equipment 27 Starter, alternator, batteryAlways disconnect the fuel rail supply on the engine compartment connection next to the A-pillar, rather than on the fuel rail.In vehicles equipped with the E-Flex cold start system, the fuel rail may be hot. — Remove the air filter line (1).
- Remove the air filter fastening bolt.
- Move the air filter upwards (2) and slide the filter towards the front of the vehicle, in points (3).
- Press the air filter with nozzle in the direction of the (arrow), removing it from the support (4).
- Remove the air filter from the engine compartment.
- Release the fuel intake line by carefully pressing hose connector (1) downwards; next, press the locks, moving the connector upwards and towards the Activated charcoal filter solenoid valve IN80(2) follow the same instructions.
- Press the line fastening (3), removing it from the upper mechanical distribution cover.
- Close the lines with the Pipe sealing tool T10249, in order to prevent impurities from entering the supply system.
- Release the fastening straps (arrows) from the upper mechanical distribution cover.
- Remove the fastening bolt (1)and remove the upper mechanical distribution cover (2).
- Remove the fastening bolts (arrow) from the upper water pump toothed belt cover, and the inlet camshaft cover.
- Release the cover pipe guide.
- Remove the upper water pump toothed belt cover (1) and the inlet camshaft cover (2).
- Remove the plug (arrow) from the cylinder block.
- Completely lower the lift. [Note: The lift must be fully lowered and the front of the vehicle must be pressed in order to install the Locating pin T10340 on the cylinder block. The camshaft is placed in front of the hole while the vehicle is lifted or placed on the ground.]
- Install the Locating pin T10340 from over the cylinder block (engine compartment) while the vehicle is on the ground and the front part is pressed.
- ⚠ If it is not possible to completely install the Locating pin T10340, the crankshaft is not properly positioned! In this case, proceed as follows: — Remover the Locating pin T10340.
- Turn the crankshaft 90º in the direction that the engine turns.
- Fully install the Locating pin T10340 from over the cylinder block (engine compartment) while the vehicle is on the ground and the front part is pressed.
- Apply a torque of 30 Nm to the Locating pin T10340. — 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- Turn the crankshaft in the engine rotation direction until it does not move anymore.
- Turn the marked tooth point (1) of the exhaust camshaft gear (3), ensuring that it faces the engine cylinder head cover shoulder (2) (whenever there is a reference in the cylinder head).
- The additional mark (1) of the exhaust camshaft gear, and additional mark (2) of the inlet camshaft gear face each other, with a slight misalignment.
- The grooves (1) of the inlet camshaft (3) are placed above the centre of the camshaft (2).
- The grooves (1) of the exhaust camshaft are placed above the centre of the camshaft (2).
- The exhaust camshaft gear slots (3) are placed next to the grooves, slightly upwards.
- ⚠ The Locating pin T10477 must facilitate the installation process. The camshafts may not be positioned using an impact tool. — Install the Locating pin T10477 in the inlet camshaft until the stop, and tighten it slightly using a bolt (arrow).
- Adjust valve timing .
- Distribution times are OK.
- ⚠ After concluding activities, ensure that the Locating pin T10340 and Locator T10477 are removed from the engine. — Install engine support plug. Tightening torque = 30 Nm. — 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
