Removing transfer box: VW Touareg I

Step-by-step removing transfer box for the VW Touareg I: 26 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Taking the transfer box off a Touareg I (7L) is done with the gearbox hanging on a jack and the engine held to the body from above, and the order is what matters. Noise insulation and any skid plate come off, the rear exhaust section and, on the V10 TDI, the catalytic converters are removed, the rear propshaft comes out and the front propshaft is unbolted at both ends. The gearbox support goes on the engine and gearbox jack with the adjustment plate for the OAD gearbox, the gearbox is bolted to it, the carrier is removed, and the assembly is lowered approximately 60 mm before the engine is braced to the body with the retaining tool and thrust pad. Then the upper bolts and breather line come off and the box is pressed off and lowered.

26 steps

🧭 Before you start

Vehicle raised, noise insulation and skid plate off, rear exhaust section and any V10 TDI catalytic converters removed, rear propshaft out, front propshaft unbolted and any balance weight removed from the transfer box. The gearbox is supported on the engine and gearbox jack with the gearbox support and adjustment plate, the gearbox carrier is unbolted from the body and the transfer box bracket, the front propshaft is removed and the side and lower connecting bolts and the motor connectors come off. The assembly is lowered approximately 60 mm, the engine is secured to the body with the retaining tool, thrust pad and a wooden block, then the upper bolts and breather line are removed and the transfer box is pressed off the gearbox and lowered.

Fits: VW Touareg I (7L, 2002–2010)

Don't miss

  • Adjustment plate for the OAD gearbox fits the support one way only; align the arms to its holes.
  • Remove the balance weight from the transfer box if one is fitted, and refit it on the same box.
  • Lower engine and gearbox approximately 60 mm, then brace the engine to the body before the upper bolts come out.
  • Grease the retaining tool pressure plate; thrust pad smaller diameter towards the plate, wooden block against the gearbox.
  • Unclip the breather line from the transfer box before pressing it off.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
