Removing mechatronic unit — VW
Removing mechatronic unit on VW: 29 steps, 2 torque figures, engines BWS, BYD, CBRA, CDLA. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Golf Cabriolet (517, 2011–2016), VW Passat B7 saloon (362, 2010–2014), VW Passat B7 Variant (365, 2010–2014), VW CC (358, 2012–2017)
- Opens: power steering fluid, gearbox oil
- Renewed: mechatronic unit
Don't miss
- Raise vehicle. All 4 supports of lifting platform must be at same height.
- Housing rib and groove of lever must be flush with one another. Do not insert tool as far as stop. — Apply a bit of force to tip of lever when turning.
- The assembly lever T10407 must remain inserted between clutch lever and gearbox housing after removing the mechatronics. Removing the lever could have a negative effect on the clutch adjustment.
- Therefore, look carefully to check which bolts you are unscrewing. Do not unscrew any cover bolts.
- Make sure no oil runs out of breather.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Insert new filter with shoulder downwards and tighten cover |
| 3 Nm (2.2 lb-ft) | Screw in overflow tube again hand-tight |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Raise vehicle. All 4 supports of lifting platform must be at same height.
- Move selector lever to position »P«.
- Connect vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systemVAS 5051.
- Select Guided fault finding.
- Under "“7-speed dual clutch gearbox”", select Moving gear actuator into -neutral- position.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove air filter housing.
- Remove battery and (battery tray)27Battery; Removing and installing battery.
- Remove starter Electrical system27Starter; Removing and installing starter.
- Release mechatronic unit connector by pulling and pull off connector.
- Pull cap off breather and close using a suitable plug to achieve an oil-tight seal.
- ⚠ The breather cap on the mechatronic unit is destroyed during removal and must be renewed! It is not possible to check the fill level of the hydraulic fluid section of the mechatronic unit. Before repairs, the breather of the mechatronic unit must be sealed so that no oil can escape. If any oil escapes from the hydraulic fluid section of the mechatronic unit, it is not possible to replenish it or check the level! Renew mechatronic unit if any oil escaped! — Remove noise insulation 66Noise insulation; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Drain gear oil, then reinstall drain plug .
- Remove all retainers and brackets from front of gearbox.
- Using a screwdriver, carefully unclip gearbox input speed sender 3G182 from housing in direction of arrow.
- Please read through this description all the way to the end first. This should help you to perform the following steps »correctly«.
- First take a look at (reddish-brown) engaging lever in this picture.
- Insert assembly lever T10407 to the right.
- Far enough until groove lines up with housing rib.
- Assembly lever T10407 should make contact with gearbox housing with its entire »rear face«.
- ⚠ Housing rib and groove of lever must be flush with one another. Do not insert tool as far as stop. — Apply a bit of force to tip of lever when turning.
- If necessary, press assembly lever T10407 against gearbox using a screwdriver. [Note: The assembly lever T10407 must remain inserted between clutch lever and gearbox housing after removing the mechatronics. Removing the lever could have a negative effect on the clutch adjustment.]
- Unscrew bolts of mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox J743»in diagonal sequence«.
- Therefore, look carefully to check which bolts you are unscrewing. Do not unscrew any cover bolts.
- Remove mechatronic unit.
- Make sure no oil runs out of breather.
- ⚠ If any oil escapes from the hydraulic fluid section of the mechatronic unit, it is not possible to replenish it or check the level! Renew mechatronic unit if any oil escaped! — First reposition mechatronic unit on gearbox housing and secure it with one bolt.
- Move mechatronic unit into »removal position« by hand . [Note: The remaining oil must be extracted from the gearbox before the mechatronic unit is fitted.]
- All the oil remaining in the gearbox must be removed using diesel extractorVAS 5226.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
