Removing bevel box, CC 2012 ►, Passat 2011 ►, with diesel engine — VW
Removing bevel box, CC 2012 ►, Passat 2011 ►, with diesel engine on VW: 31 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm.
Removing the bevel box (angle drive) on the four-wheel drive diesel VW CC (358) and Passat B7 (362, 365) means working around the right drive shaft, the particulate filter and the propshaft. The car is raised with all lift arms level and the selector in P; a second mechanic holds the brake while the right drive shaft bolt is loosened. Engine cover, upper particulate filter fixings, noise insulation and the drive shaft heat shield come off, the right drive shaft and lower filter bracket are removed, and the propshaft is marked and unbolted. Then the oil is drained, the right flange shaft is pulled with puller T10037, and the carrier and upper bolts are removed so the bevel box can be pressed off. Marking the propshaft position and pulling the flange shaft squarely decide the job.
🧭 Before you start
Raise the car level, select P and loosen the right drive shaft bolt with the brake held. Remove the engine cover, secure the particulate filter, take off insulation, heat shield, right drive shaft and filter bracket. Mark and detach the propshaft, support the engine with the pendulum support, drain the bevel box (new plug 15 Nm), pull the flange shaft and seal the opening. Remove the turbocharger support, bevel box carrier and upper bolts and press the unit off.
Fits: VW CC (358, 2012–2017), VW Passat B7 saloon (362, 2010–2014), VW Passat B7 Variant (365, 2010–2014)
- Opens: engine oil
- Special tools named: puller
Don't miss
- Do not lower the car to the ground after loosening the drive shaft centre bolt.
- Mark the propshaft flexible coupling against the bevel box output shaft before unbolting.
- Use puller T10037 for the right flange shaft to avoid bearing damage.
- Fit a new drain plug and tighten it to 15 Nm.
- A new bevel box comes without an intermediate flange; remove the old flange.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) | Unscrew and remove oil drain plug (A) from bevel box and allow oil to drain out |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Raise vehicle. All 4 supports of lifting platform must be at same height.
- Move selector lever to position »P«. [Note: After loosening centre bolt, do not lower vehicle to ground again.]
- Depress brake pedal to remove bolt for right drive shaft (arrow). A second mechanic is required.
- Remove cover for engine.
- Remove diesel particulate filter (A) in upper area of engine (arrows) and secure on plenum chamber bulkhead to prevent it from falling down 26Emission control; Removing and installing particulate filter.
- Remove noise insulation below engine and gearbox. General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Remove drive shaft heat shield from bevel box (2 nuts, (arrows)) Running gear, axles, steering40Drive shaft; Removing and installing drive shaft.
- Unscrew coolant hoses of supplementary heater from engine (arrow), pull off from threaded pins and push to one side until gearbox carrier can be unscrewed Supplementary heater82Coolant circuit with supplementary heater; Coolant hose schematic diagram for vehicles with supplementary heater.
- Remove right drive shaft Running gear, axles, steering40Drive shaft; Removing and installing drive shaft.
- Remove lower bracket for diesel particulate filter 26Emission control; Removing and installing particulate filter.
- Mark position of propshaft with flexible coupling relative to output shaft of bevel box (arrows).
- Unbolt propshaft from bevel box (arrows)39Propshaft; Removing and installing propshaft.
- Push front propshaft tube to stop.
- Place a cloth on subframe and put propshaft on it.
- Remove pendulum support from gearbox, bolt (2) and bolt (3).
- Push engine/gearbox to front end and support using pendulum support as shown.
- Position used oil collection and extraction unitV.A.G 1782 under bevel box.
- Unscrew and remove oil drain plug (A) from bevel box and allow oil to drain out. Then screw in new bolt and tighten to 15 Nm. — 15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- Unscrew intermediate flange (arrows) if a »new« bevel box is installed, because there is no intermediate flange on »new« bevel box.
- Remove countersunk bolt for right flange shaft with socket T10107 A. To do this, screw 2 bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with an assembly lever.
- Now bolt puller T10037 to right flange shaft. [Note: To remove right flange shaft, use puller T10037 to avoid damage to bearings of flange shaft.]
- Lay a spacer (e.g. press pieceVW 434) between bevel box carrier and knurled nut T10371/1.
- Use spindle(A) to align puller parallel to flange.
- Pull out right flange shaft.
- Seal bevel box with cap T10460.
- Remove support for turbocharger (arrow). 21Turbocharger; Removing and installing turbocharger
- Remove bolts (A) and (B) for bevel box carrier to engine and bevel box.
- Remove bevel box carrier.
- Remove upper securing bolts (arrows) securing bevel box to gearbox.
- Carefully press off bevel box and remove.
- Install bevel box .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
