Removing and installing valve stem oil seals — VW

Removing and installing valve stem oil seals on VW: 27 steps, engines CBTA, CBUA, CCCA. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This covers renewing valve stem oil seals with the cylinder head left on the engine, on the CBTA, CBUA and CCCA petrol engines in cars with the platform codes listed below. The camshafts come out, then the roller rocker fingers, which must be laid out so each one goes back to its own valve. The spark plug comes out, the piston of the cylinder being worked on is set to bottom dead centre, and the cylinder is pressurised through the plug hole so the valves stay shut while the springs are compressed. The cotter removal and fitting kit then lifts cotters, plate and spring as one, the old seal comes off with a puller, and the new one goes on over a protective sleeve. Steady air pressure and keeping parts in order matter most.

27 steps 3 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

With the camshafts removed and the rocker fingers set aside in order, each cylinder is taken to bottom dead centre and held on compressed air through the spark plug hole. The guide plate and assembly cartridge compress the spring and capture the cotters, the old seal is pulled, and the new one is pressed on over a plastic sleeve. The spring, plate and cotters go back with the same tool before moving on to the next valve.

Fits: platform codes A32, A33

  • Special tools named: puller

Don't miss

  • Keep roller rocker fingers in order; they must not be interchanged between valves.
  • Air supply to the plug-hole adapter must be at least 6 bar, or a valve can drop into the cylinder.
  • Set each piston to bottom dead centre before releasing that cylinder's cotters.
  • Fit the plastic sleeve over the stem before pushing the new seal on, so the lip is not cut.
  • Lubricate the new seal lip before pressing it onto the valve guide with the fitting tool.
  • If the puller will not fit, knock out its roll pin and remove the impact extractor attachment.

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ Due to the enclosed spaces, observe the following during all assembly work, particularly in the engine compartment:Route lines of any kind and cables so that original routing can be restored.Ensure sufficient clearance from all moving or hot components. — Remove camshafts .
  2. Remove roller rocker fingers and place onto a clean surface. When doing this, ensure that the roller rocker fingers are not interchanged.
  3. Remove spark plugs with spark plug socket3122 B.
  4. Secure guide plateVAS 5161/19B with knurled screwsVAS 5161/12 to cylinder head as shown.
  5. Set piston of the respective cylinder to "“bottom dead centre”".

  1. Screw adapter T40012 into spark plug hole and connect to compressed air supply of at least 6 bar.
  2. Knock loose sticking valve cotters using punchVAS 5161/3 and a plastic-headed hammer.
  3. Screw snap-in deviceVAS 5161/6 with engaging forkVAS 5161/5 into guide plateVAS 5161/19B.
  4. Insert assembly cartridgeVAS 5161/8 into guide plateVAS 5161/19B.
  5. Attach pressure forkVAS 5161/2 to snap-in deviceVAS 5161/6. [Note: On the exhaust side, the pressure forkVAS 5161/2 must be hooked in as shown.]
  6. Press down assembly cartridgeVAS 5161/8. At the same time, turn knurled screw of assembly cartridgeVAS 5161/8 clockwise until ends engage in valve cotters.
  7. Move knurled screw back and forth lightly to press apart valve cotters and capture them in the assembly piece.
  8. Release the pressure forkVAS 5161/2.
  9. Take out assembly cartridgeVAS 5161/8 with valve plates and valve springs.
  10. Pull off valve stem oil seal with valve stem seal puller3364.
  11. If valve stem seal puller3364 cannot be used on account of restricted space, knock out roll pin (arrow) with a punch and remove impact extractor attachment.
  12. Position lower part of valve stem seal puller3364 on valve stem oil seal.
  13. Insert a punch (1) through hole in lower section of puller.
  14. Apply assembly lever to puller and pull out valve stem oil seal (arrow).
  15. To prevent damage to the new valve stem seals (B), attach plastic sleeve (A) to valve stem.
  16. Lubricate sealing lip of valve stem oil seal (B), place it in the valve stem seal fitting tool3365 and push carefully onto valve guide.
  17. Remove plastic sleeve (A).
  18. Insert valve spring and valve spring plate.
  19. Set up Removal/installing device for valve cottersVAS 5161 A as shown in illustration. [Note: If valve cotters have been removed from assembly cartridge, they need to be put into insertion deviceVAS 5161/18 first.Press assembly cartridgeVAS 5161/8 onto insertion device from above and pick up valve cotters.]
  20. Press assembly cartridgeVAS 5161/8 down using pressure forkVAS 5161/2, tap lightly in bottom area against assembly cartridge, turn knurled screw of assembly cartridge back and forth and pull upwards when doing this.
  21. Release the pressure forkVAS 5161/2 with knurled screw still in pulled-out position.
  22. Remove removal and installing device for valve cottersVAS 5161 A.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
