Removing and installing valve body: VW 4.9 TDI (CBWA)
Step-by-step removing and installing valve body for the VW 4.9 TDI (CBWA): 50 steps, 3 torque figures.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform codes 5C7, 5C1
- Special tools named: VAS 5051
Don't miss
- Before separating connectors at senders and solenoid valves, solenoid valves or senders and respective connectors must be marked for identification.
- If a connector is damaged, the wiring harness and the valve body must be replaced together with the solenoid valves. — Separate connectors (A) and (B).
- Ensure that spool valve (3) on valve body into which lever engages is not damaged.
- Therefore, always push spool valve into valve body, secure against falling out and never interchange.
- Special care and attention must be given to routing of wiring to prevent wires from being trapped when valve body is fitted.
🔧 Engine codes this applies to
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | Tighten gearbox oil temperature sender G93 |
| 4 Nm (3.0 lb-ft) | Push operating rod with manual selector valve into valve body to stop (direction of… |
| 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts in the order |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Do not run engine or tow vehicle with sump removed or when there is no ATF in gearbox. — Disconnect battery earth Electrical system27Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery.
- Remove noise insulation General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Remove sump .
- Remove ATF strainer .
- Draw a sketch of all senders and solenoid valves with their respective connectors analogous to figure.
- Before separating connectors at senders and solenoid valves, solenoid valves or senders and respective connectors must be marked for identification.
- ⚠ This sketch and identification are absolutely vital to prevent inadvertently interchanging connectors on senders and solenoid valves when reinstalling valve body.Under certain circumstances, interchanging connectors may lead to destruction of the gearbox. — Using a small screwdriver, carefully release securing tabs of connectors on solenoid valves (1) to (8) and pull off connectors.
- ⚠ If a connector is damaged, the wiring harness and the valve body must be replaced together with the solenoid valves. — Separate connectors (A) and (B).
- Unbolt connector retainers (1) and (2).
- Unscrew gear oil temperature sender G93(item 3) and carefully pull out from valve body.
- Detach wiring harnesses from retainers (arrows).
- If fitted, bend back securing tab on lever (arrows).
- Remove lever (1) from selector shaft.
- In the process, carefully grip selector lever (1) with pliers (2) so that torque is not transferred to multifunction switch F125.
- Ensure that spool valve (3) on valve body into which lever engages is not damaged.
- Therefore, always push spool valve into valve body, secure against falling out and never interchange.
- ⚠ If other bolts are loosened, the function of the valve body will be impaired or the valve body will be distorted. — Unbolt brackets (1) and (2).
- Loosen securing bolts (arrows), (arrows A) and (arrows B) for valve body diagonally and carefully remove valve body.
- When removing valve body, observer damper piston (2).
- Remove damper piston (2) with spring .
- Special care and attention must be given to routing of wiring to prevent wires from being trapped when valve body is fitted.
- Route wiring harness (5) in specified recess in gearbox according to figure.
- Route wiring harnesses (1), (3), (4) and (5) over edge of the gearbox according to figure.
- Secure wiring harnesses on gearbox with adhesive tape.
- Coat damper piston (2) with ATF and insert with spring in gear housing as show in diagram.
- Carefully fit valve body, screw in 2 bolts and tighten by hand.
- Fit remaining bolts and retainers (1) and (2) and tighten by hand. [Note: If lines are too short to be connected to the senders or bolted at dedicated points on the valve body, they have been routed incorrectly or are trapped by the valve body. In this case, the valve body needs to be removed again so that lines can be routed correctly. All bolts for securing the valve body must be renewed.]
- Tighten valve body bolts diagonally, working from centre outwards.
- Install gear oil temperature sender G93 and tighten it.
- Fit connectors (qty. 8) to solenoid valves at positions previously recorded .
- ⚠ Under certain circumstances, interchanging connectors may lead to destruction of the gearbox. If a connector is damaged, the wiring harness and the valve body must be replaced together with the solenoid valves. — Tighten retainers for connectors .
- Push on connectors and .
- Hook wiring harness (3) into retainer (7)(arrow B).
- Fit lever (2) onto selector shaft (6).
- Position washer (5) and nut (4) on selector shaft (6).
- Tighten lever nut (1).
- In the process, carefully grip lever (1) with pliers (2) so that torque is not transferred to multifunction switch F125.
- Ensure that spool valve (3) on valve body into which lever engages is not damaged.
- If fitted, lift up securing tab on nut (arrows).
- Install ATF strainer .
- Install sump .
- Connect battery earth Electrical system27Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery.
- Fill with ATF; check ATF level and top up .
- Install noise insulation General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Connect , e.g. VAS 5051, and choose options until "“Function/component selection”" is displayed.
- Then press "“Drive (Rep. Gr. 01; 10...26; 28...39)”".
- Then "“6-speed automatic gearbox 09G”".
- Press "“01 - Self-diagnosis”".
- Press "“Functions”".
- Press "“Basic setting”".

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
