🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step
25 Nm (18 lb-ft)Hold eccentric in that position and tighten bolt (1)
30 Nm (22 lb-ft)Screw locking pin into cylinder block as far as stop and tighten
50 Nm (37 lb-ft)Tighten bolts (1, 2) initially

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Loosen hose clips (1, 2) and remove air pipe.

  4. Drain coolant .
  5. Unscrew bolts (A ... D), and push cover (1) for thermostat to one side.
  6. Lay wiring harness to one side (arrows).
  7. Unscrew bolts (1, 3) and remove cover (2) for toothed belt for coolant pump.
  8. Unscrew bolts (arrows) and detach sealing cap (1).
  9. Separate plug-in connectors from fuel hose and from hose to activated charcoal filter 20plug-in connectors; Separating plug-in connectors.
  10. Release hoses from retainer (3) and lay them to one side.
  11. Remove bolt (2).
  12. Release clips (arrows) and detach upper toothed belt guard (1). [Note: To protect the toothed belt, place a cloth under the camshaft adjuster and tensioning roller to catch the engine oil which runs out.The contact points between the toothed belt and components such as camshaft pulleys, crankshaft pulley, tensioning roller and idler pulley must be free of oil.]
  13. Unscrew bolts (arrows) and remove cover from camshaft adjuster for exhaust camshaft.
  14. Remove ignition coil 1 with output stage N70 and cylinder 1 spark plug .
  15. Insert a screwdriver with a shaft length of at least 250 mm into spark plug hole so that it contact piston crown.
  16. Turn the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation until the piston in cylinder 1 shows "“BDC”".
  17. Turn the crankshaft further, until the screwdriver has moved (30 mm) in the (direction of the arrows)
  18. Unscrew plug for "“TDC”" hole in cylinder block.
  19. Screw locking pin T10340 into cylinder block as far as stop and tighten to 30 Nm. — 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
  20. Rotate crankshaft in normal direction of rotation as far as stop. [Note: Locking pin T10340 locks crankshaft in direction of engine rotation only.]
  21. Remove vibration damper .
  22. Unscrew bolts (arrows) and remove toothed belt guard.
  23. Unscrew plug (1) on camshaft sprocket on intake side using counterhold T10172 with adapter T10172/1.
  24. Loosen bolts (1) and (2) by approx. 1 turn using counterhold T10172 with adapter T10172/1.
  25. Place special wrench, 30 mm T10499 on eccentric adjuster (2) of tensioning roller.
  26. Loosen bolt (1) with tool insert T10500.
  27. Release tensioning roller on eccentric adjuster (2) using special wrench, 30 mm T10499.
  28. Remove toothed belt.
  29. Detach crankshaft pulley (1)(arrow). [Note: Renew bolts that are tightened with specified tightening angle.Renew O-ring of plug if damaged.]
  30. Turn camshafts to correct positions.
  31. Use a waterproof pen to mark the tooth over the hole on coolant pump drive sprocket from above.
  32. If camshafts are not positioned as described, unscrew locking pin T10340, turn crankshaft one rotation further and return to "“TDC”" position.
  33. When camshafts are positioned as described, insert camshaft clamp T10504 into inlet camshaft as far as stop and fit bolts (arrows) (do not screw in yet).
  34. Turn inlet camshaft with camshaft clamp T10504 in (direction of arrow A).
  35. At the same time, turn the coolant pump drive sprocket (1) in (direction of arrow B).
  36. Have a second mechanic insert the locking pin T10504/1 as far as stop.
  37. Tighten bolts (arrows) by hand.
  38. Renew bolts (1) and (2) for camshaft pulleys and screw them in loosely.
  39. Fit crankshaft sprocket onto crankshaft.
  40. Fit toothed belt first on crankshaft pulley from below.
  41. Install lower toothed belt guard (arrows).
  42. Install vibration damper .
  43. Renew bolts (1) and (2) for camshaft pulleys and screw them in loosely.
  44. Pull toothed belt upwards and fit it on idler pulley (1), tensioning roller (2) and camshaft toothed belt pulleys(3) and (4).
  45. Using special wrench, 30 mm T10499, turn eccentric adjuster (2) of tensioning roller in direction of (arrow) until adjustment indicator (3) is positioned approx. 10 mm to the right of adjustment window.
  46. Turn eccentric adjuster back until adjustment indicator is positioned exactly in adjustment window. [Note: Torque wrenchVAS 6583 must be used for tightening. When setting the specified torque on the torque wrenchVAS 6583, the length indicated on insert tool, 13 mm T10500 must be entered in the torque wrench.]
  47. Hold eccentric in that position and tighten bolt (1) to 25 Nm using insert tool T10500 with torque wrenchVAS 6583. [Note: Turning the engine further or running the engine may lead to slight differences in the position of the adjustment indicator (3) in relation to the adjustment window. This does not affect the toothed belt tension or the timing.] — 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  48. Tighten bolts (1, 2) initially to 50 Nm using counterhold T10172 with adapter T10172/1. — 50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
  49. Pull out locking pin T10504/1.
  50. Remove bolts (arrows) and detach camshaft clamp T10504.
  51. Unscrew locking pin T10340.
  52. Turn crankshaft 2 turns in direction of rotation of engine.
  53. Screw locking pin T10340 into cylinder block as far as stop and tighten to 30 Nm. — 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
  54. Rotate crankshaft further in direction of engine rotation as far as stop. [Note: Locking pin T10340 locks crankshaft in direction of engine rotation only.] [Note: It should be possible to insert the camshaft clamp T10504 easily.Do not knock camshaft clamp into place with any kind of tool.]
  55. Insert camshaft clamp T10504 into inlet camshaft as far as stop and fit bolts (arrows) (do not screw in yet).

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
