Removing and installing switches in centre console — VW

Removing and installing switches in centre console on VW: 7 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check.

On the VW Eos (codes listed below), the switches in the centre console sit in a mounting frame around the ashtray, just ahead of the gear lever. With ignition and electrical loads off and the key out, the gear lever gaiter is levered carefully out of the console at its fasteners, which exposes the securing bolts for the frame. Once those are out, the frame comes away with the ashtray, the connectors are released, and the individual switch is freed by releasing its locking lugs. The job is quick; the risk is breaking console clips or cracking the frame by levering too hard, and stripping the plastic threads on refit, since the frame bolts only take 1.5 Nm.

🧭 Before you start

Switch off and remove the key, lever out the gear lever gaiter, then remove the frame securing bolts and lift out the frame with the ashtray. Disconnect the connectors and release the locking lugs to remove the switch. Fit the new switch, reconnect and refit the frame, tightening its bolts to 1.5 Nm.

Fits: platform code 1F8

Don't miss

  • Lever the gear lever gaiter out carefully at its fasteners to avoid breaking clips.
  • Release connector locks fully before pulling them apart.
  • Tighten the mounting frame bolts to only 1.5 Nm.
  • Check all switch functions after refitting (general practice).

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
