Removing and installing sump, engine codes BVX, BVY, BVZ — VW

Removing and installing sump, engine codes BVX, BVY, BVZ on VW: 12 steps, engines BVX, BVY, BVZ. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This covers the sump on the BVX, BVY and BVZ petrol engines in the VW Touran I (1T) and Golf V (1K), plus the other platform code listed below. After the noise insulation is off and the oil drained, the sump-to-gearbox bolts come out, the oil level and temperature sender G266 is unplugged if fitted, and the awkward flywheel-end bolts are loosened with tool 3185 and removed with the long Allen key T10058. The sump usually needs a few light blows from a rubber hammer to break the seal. Refitting is where it goes right or wrong: perfectly clean surfaces, a bead from a nozzle cut to about 3 mm, the sump fitted at once, and no oil until the sealant has had about 30 minutes.

12 steps 3 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Remove the noise insulation, drain the oil, undo the sump-to-gearbox bolts and unplug G266. Release the flywheel-end bolts with 3185 and T10058, remove the rest and tap the sump free. Clean all sealant from block and sump, apply a bead of silicone with the nozzle cut at the front mark, fit the sump immediately and tighten as specified. Wait about 30 minutes before filling with oil.

Fits: VW Touran I (1T, 2003–2015), VW Golf V / Jetta (1K, 2003–2009); platform code 5M1

  • Opens: engine oil

Don't miss

  • Check the sealing compound expiry date before use.
  • Cut the tube nozzle so the bead is about 3 mm; a thicker bead can block the oil strainer.
  • Sealing faces must be free of oil and grease; scrape the block, brush the sump.
  • Fit and tighten the sump immediately after applying sealant.
  • With gearbox fitted the sump must rest against it; with gearbox off, it must be flush with the block.
  • Let the sealant cure for about 30 minutes before filling with engine oil.

  1. Unscrew remaining bolts and remove sump. Loosen sump with light blows of a rubber headed hammer, if necessary.
  2. Remove sealant residue from cylinder block with a flat scraper.
  3. Remove remaining sealant from sump e.g. with rotating plastic brush or similar. [Note: Observe expiry date of sealing compound. The sump must be installed immediately and tightened after applying silicone sealing compound.]
  4. Clean sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.
  5. Cut off tube nozzle at forward marking (∅ of nozzle approx. 3 mm).
  6. Apply silicone sealing compound, as shown, to clean sealing surface on sump. Sealant bead must be: [Note: The sealant bead must not be thicker, otherwise excess sealing compound may enter the oil sump and block the oil suction line strainer. If gearbox is removed, sump must align smoothly with cylinder block. If gearbox is installed, sump must rest against gearbox.Let sealing compound dry for approx. 30 minutes after installing oil sump. Only then fill with engine oil.]
  7. Put sump in position immediately and tighten bolts as follows: [Note: When installing sump with engine out of the vehicle, ensure that sump is flush with cylinder block at flywheel end.Let sealing compound dry for approx. 30 minutes after installing oil sump. Only then fill with engine oil.]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
