Removing and installing steering column, steel steering column — VW

Removing and installing steering column, steel steering column on VW: 39 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing a steel steering column on the VW platform codes listed below starts with the airbag and ends with it, so the safety preparation counts as much as the column bolts. The battery earth strap is disconnected and the wheels set straight ahead before the driver airbag, steering wheel, column switch module and the upper, lower and dash trims are removed. Below the column the harness, steering lock connector, earth wire and immobiliser reader coil connector are freed, the footwell trim comes off, and the universal joint bolt is undone so the joint can be pulled off the rack. The crash bar is removed, the column bolts are undone and the column is lowered out of its guide. Refitting depends on a new assembly aid and the strict bolting sequence.

39 steps

🧭 Before you start

Preparation: battery disconnected, wheels straight ahead, airbag, steering wheel, switch module and trims removed. The column wiring, earth and immobiliser connector are freed, the footwell trim and universal joint come off, then the crash bar and column bolts. The column is lowered and pulled forwards out of the cross member guide. On installation a new assembly aid is fitted, the column is inserted and swivelled up until it engages, bolts are started then tightened in sequence, and the universal joint goes on with a new bolt. Trims, wheel and airbag follow, and the battery is reconnected with nobody in the car.

Fits: platform codes 121, BL1

Don't miss

  • Wheels must be straight ahead before the column is disturbed, or the airbag system can fail later.
  • Fit a new assembly aid to the steering column before installation.
  • Follow the bolting sequence strictly: start all bolts, then tighten in order.
  • Use a new universal joint bolt and tighten to specified torque.
  • Nobody in the vehicle when the battery is reconnected.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
