Removing and installing side airbag crash sensor on driver side G179/G180 — VW
Removing and installing side airbag crash sensor on driver side G179/G180 on VW: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The side airbag crash sensor on the driver's side, G179/G180, is a pressure sensor mounted inside the front door on the VW platform codes listed below, and it is handled as a pyrotechnic component from start to finish. The battery earth cable is disconnected with the ignition switched on, the front door trim is removed, and after you have discharged yourself on the door striker plate the connector is pulled from the sensor. The catch is pressed up with a screwdriver and the bracket with the sensor comes off the assembly carrier. Fitting reverses that with the connector pushed in until it clicks and its lock pressed home. Because the sensor reads a pressure pulse inside the door, the door has to seal properly afterwards, and the battery goes back on with the ignition on and nobody in the car.
🧭 Before you start
Disconnect the battery earth cable with the ignition on, then remove the front door trim. Discharge yourself on the door striker plate, unplug connector (3) from the sensor, press the catch upwards with a screwdriver and remove the bracket with the sensor from the assembly carrier. Fit the new sensor, connect the plug until it engages audibly, press in the connector lock, and reconnect the battery earth cable with the ignition switched on. If the airbag warning lamp shows a fault, read, delete and re-read the event memory.
Fits: VW Jetta VI (16, 2010–2018)
Don't miss
- Ignition on when the battery earth cable comes off and when it goes back on.
- Touch the door striker plate before handling the sensor connector.
- Connector pushed to the stop, audibly engaged, lock pressed in; no trapped wires.
- The door must seal effectively or the pressure sensor cannot work.
- Nobody in the car when the battery is reconnected; airbag lamp fault means read, delete, read again.

📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Follow safety regulations for pyrotechnic components .Observe safety precautions for crash sensors (pressure sensors) for front side airbags . — Disconnect battery earth cable with ignition switched on Electrical system27Battery; Connecting and disconnecting battery.
- Remove front door trim .
- ⚠ Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. separating the electrical connector), the person handling them must ensure that he/she is "“electrically discharged”". To do this, briefly touch, for example, the door striker plate. — Disconnect connector (3) from side airbag crash sensor on driver side G179(2).
- Press catch upwards (arrow) using a screwdriver.
- Remove bracket (1) together with crash sensor (2) from assembly carrier.
- ⚠ For the crash sensor (pressure sensor) to function properly, it is vital to ensure that the door forms an effective seal.Follow safety regulations for pyrotechnic components .Observe safety precautions for crash sensors (pressure sensors) for front side airbags .Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting the electrical connector), the person handling them must ensure that he/she is "“electrically discharged”". - Press in connector lock to lock the connector. [Note: Ensure that the electrical connectors are pushed fully onto stop and engage audibly.Ensure that no wires are trapped.]
- ⚠ Battery must be connected with ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag, seat belt tensioners) are repaired incorrectly, undesired triggering may occur after the battery is connected. Ensure that nobody is in vehicle when connecting battery. — Connect battery earth cable with ignition switched on Electrical system27Battery; Connecting and disconnecting battery. [Note: If airbag warning lamp K75 indicates a fault following installation, event memory must be read, deleted and read again .]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
