Removing and installing selector lever and selector mechanism with selector lever cable — VW

Removing and installing selector lever and selector mechanism with selector lever cable on VW: 16 steps, engines BWS, BYD, CBRA, CDLA.

This job removes the selector lever, selector mechanism and cable together on the VW platform codes listed below with BWS, BYD, CBRA, CDLA, CDLC or CDLF engines. Inside the car, the lever handle and centre console come off; at the gearbox, the cable is levered off the selector shaft lever with an open jaw spanner and unclipped from its bracket. Under the car, the noise insulation, front exhaust pipe and heat shield have to go before the mechanism is unplugged and its 4 bolts removed. The cable catches are the weak point: if a lug breaks while releasing the cable from its support, the whole mechanism with cable is renewed. On refit, both the selector lever and the selector shaft on the gearbox are put in P before the cable is connected, then the cable is checked and adjusted.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the selector lever handle and centre console, lever the cable off the selector shaft lever, release it from the cable support and unclip it at the gearbox. Raise the car, remove noise insulation, front exhaust pipe and heat shield, unplug the mechanism and remove its 4 bolts. Before refitting the cable, put the selector lever and the gearbox selector shaft in P, check the cable before fitting the ball head, and adjust the cable after installation.

Fits: platform codes 602, 612, 641, 642, 643, 604, 644, 614, 603

Don't miss

  • Push the cable catches together gently; the lugs break easily.
  • A broken lug means renewing the complete selector mechanism with cable.
  • Set both the selector lever and gearbox selector shaft to P before connecting the cable.
  • Check the selector lever cable before the ball head goes on the selector shaft.
  • Adjust the cable after installation and confirm every selector position.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
