Removing and installing roof spoiler, »R-Line«: VW Passat B8
Step-by-step removing and installing roof spoiler, »R-Line« for the VW Passat B8: 10 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The R-Line roof spoiler on the Passat B8 (3G5 platform code) is glued to the rear lid, so the job is cutting out and re-bonding, not unbolting. The side spoilers come off first and the roof spoiler trim is released from its fasteners, then a cutting cord is threaded in at a corner between lid and spoiler and worked through the adhesive with a sawing motion on the pull handles, to the middle and then from the other side. For refitting a 3.5 mm bead of PUR adhesive goes on the inside of the spoiler from a hand cartridge gun and the spoiler is offered up with a second mechanic. The brake light goes in before the trim is clipped back. Cord technique and bead size decide it: a thin bead leaves gaps, a thick one squeezes out onto paint.
🧭 Before you start
Side spoilers off, roof spoiler trim unclipped, then the adhesive is cut: cord threaded in at a corner, sawn through to the middle with the pull handles, repeated from the other side, and the spoiler lifted away. A 3.5 mm bead of PUR adhesive is applied inside the spoiler, which a second mechanic helps position on the rear lid in the arrow direction. Once the brake light is installed the trim is engaged back into the spoiler and the side spoilers refitted.
Fits: VW Passat B8 (3G, 2014–)
Don't miss
- Remove both side spoilers before starting on the roof spoiler.
- Saw the cutting cord from each corner to the middle; do not lever the spoiler up.
- PUR adhesive bead 3.5 mm on the inside of the spoiler, applied with the cartridge gun.
- Fit with a second mechanic; the bead smears if the spoiler is dragged into position.
- Brake light goes in before the roof spoiler trim is engaged.
- Mask the rear lid paint along the bond line before cutting the old adhesive.

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
