Removing and installing rear three-point seat belt, with belt tensioner — VW

Removing and installing rear three-point seat belt, with belt tensioner on VW: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

The rear three-point seat belt with belt tensioner on the VW platform code listed below (AM1) is a pyrotechnic component, and the factory procedure treats it like an airbag. The battery earth cable is disconnected with the ignition switched on, and reconnected the same way at the end with nobody sitting in the car. Access is through the rear shelf support and the outer rear seat belt guide anchor, both of which come out before the inertia reel is reached. Before the igniter connector is touched the mechanic earths himself by touching the body or the door striker plate; a static discharge can fire the tensioner. The reel itself is held by a bolt and lifts out of its mounting. On refitting the connector must be pushed on to the stop until it engages audibly, and if the belt is being renewed after an accident the belt system bolts are renewed with it.

8 steps

🧭 Before you start

Battery earth off with the ignition on, then the rear shelf support and the outer belt guide anchor are removed. After discharging static by touching the body, the wiring harness is disconnected and the connector unclipped, the bolt removed and the inertia reel taken out of its mounting. Installation is the reverse with the connector pushed fully home, new bolts if the car has had an accident, and the battery reconnected with the ignition on and the vehicle empty.

Fits: VW Golf Sportsvan (AM1, 2014–2020)

Don't miss

  • Disconnect and reconnect the battery earth cable with the ignition switched on.
  • Touch the body or door striker plate to discharge static before unplugging the igniter wiring.
  • Push the connector on to the stop until it audibly engages.
  • Belt system bolts are renewed if parts were removed because of an accident.
  • Nobody in the vehicle when the battery is reconnected.
  • Follow the disposal rules for pyrotechnic components when the old tensioner is scrapped.

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ Observe safety instructions for pyrotechnic components .Observe disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components . — Disconnect battery earth cable with ignition switched on Electrical system27Battery; Connecting and disconnecting battery.
  2. Remove rear shelf support .
  3. Remove outer rear seat belt guide anchor .
  4. ⚠ Electrostatic discharges may result in unintentional triggering of airbag. Therefore, the mechanic must electrostatically discharge him/herself before disconnecting the igniter and earth wires. This can be done by briefly touching the body or striker plate of the door. — Disconnect wiring harness and unclip connector (1).
  5. Remove bolt (2).
  6. Remove belt inertia reel (3) from mounting.
  7. ⚠ Observe safety instructions for pyrotechnic components .Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting the electrical connector), the person handling them must ensure that he/she is "“electrically discharged”". To do this e.g. briefly touch the door striker plate. — If parts of the belt system are removed because of an accident, the belt system bolts must be renewed. [Note: Ensure electrical connector is pushed fully onto stop and engages audibly.]
  8. ⚠ Battery must be connected with ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag, seat belt tensioners) are repaired incorrectly, undesired triggering may occur after the battery is connected. Ensure that nobody is in vehicle when connecting battery. — Connect battery earth cable with ignition switched on Electrical system27Battery; Connecting and disconnecting battery.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
