Removing and installing rear brake cable — VW
Removing and installing rear brake cable on VW: 21 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Replacing a rear handbrake cable on the platform codes listed below (A32, A33) involves work at both ends: at the rear caliper, and inside the car under the service flap in the rear storage compartment of the centre console, where the cables meet the compensator on the quick adjuster. At the caliper the lever is pushed in to unhook the cable and the locking lugs are squeezed to free it from the bracket. Inside, the cable is unhooked from the compensator, unclipped from its bracket and pulled out of the guide tube. On refit the seating of the guide tube and its seal is the first thing to check, the cable is attached at its marking, and the parking brake is adjusted at the end. Skipping that adjustment is the usual reason for a weak handbrake afterwards.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the wheels and release the handbrake. Unhook the cable at the caliper lever and free it from the caliper bracket. Open the centre console rear compartment and service flap, detach the cable from the compensator, unclip it and pull it out of the guide tube. Refit by pushing the cable fully into the guide tube, attaching it at its marking and to the compensator, clipping it into the bracket and the caliper bracket until the lugs engage, then hook it to the lever and adjust the parking brake.
Fits: platform codes A32, A33
Don't miss
- Check the guide tube and its seal are correctly seated before feeding in the new cable.
- Attach the cable at its marking on the retainer.
- Push the cable through the caliper bracket until the locking lugs audibly engage.
- Adjust the parking brake after fitting; do not skip it.
- Check both rear wheels turn freely with the handbrake off (general practice).

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
