Removing and installing radiator (Golf, Golf Plus, Scirocco, Eos) — VW
Removing and installing radiator (Golf, Golf Plus, Scirocco, Eos) on VW: 10 steps, engines CAXA, CMSB.
Changing the radiator on the CAXA and CMSB engines in the Golf V and VI (1K1, 5K1), Golf Plus, Scirocco and Eos is a front-end job: the radiator does not come out past the lock carrier in its fitted position. The coolant is drained, the hoses pulled off, and the connectors for the thermal switch and the radiator fan unplugged before the radiator securing bolts are removed. Then the front bumper cover comes off and the lock carrier is brought into the service position so the condenser can be unbolted from the radiator and tied to the lock carrier with the refrigerant circuit untouched. What decides whether this goes well is the air conditioning plumbing: the refrigerant lines must not be stretched, kinked or bent while the carrier is moved, and their retaining clamps are released first so nothing is under strain. Electrical routing is restored to the original path on reassembly.
🧭 Before you start
Coolant is drained, then the radiator hoses, the thermal switch and fan connectors and the radiator securing bolts are removed from the engine side. The front bumper cover comes off, the bolts at the radiator support are undone and the lock carrier is brought into the service position. The refrigerant line clamps are released and the condenser unbolted from the radiator and secured to the lock carrier, leaving the radiator free. Installation is the reverse, with the electrical connections routed as original.
Fits: VW Golf V / Jetta (1K, 2003–2009), VW Golf VI (5K, 2008–2013); platform codes 5M1, 1F7, 137, 521
- Opens: coolant
Don't miss
- Drain the coolant first; the hoses come off the radiator before any bolts.
- Unplug the thermal switch and radiator fan connectors before moving the lock carrier.
- Refrigerant lines must not be stretched, kinked or bent while the carrier is in service position.
- Release the retaining clamps on the refrigerant lines before unbolting the condenser.
- Condenser stays connected: unbolt it from the radiator and secure it to the lock carrier.
- Route electrical connections as original once the radiator is in.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
