Removing and installing radiator and radiator fan — VW
Removing and installing radiator and radiator fan on VW: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
A radiator with a thermoswitch and a fan that lifts out with its cowling marks this as the older layout on the VW models the page is filed under, and the steps reflect that: nothing electronic beyond the thermoswitch and fan connectors. Coolant is drained, hoses pulled off the radiator, connectors taken off the thermoswitch and the fan, then the radiator grille and the air guides come away so the securing bolts and brackets can be reached. The radiator, cowling and fan leave as one assembly. What decides the job is the refill: the system is filled with coolant at the end, and that, not the lifting out, is where air gets trapped and the thermoswitch never sees the right temperature. Note how the brackets sit so the cowling goes back square.
🧭 Before you start
Drain the coolant, pull the hoses off the radiator and the connectors off the thermoswitch and fan. Remove the radiator grille and the air guides for access, undo the securing bolts and brackets, and lift the radiator out complete with the fan cowling and fan. Refit in reverse and fill the system with coolant.
- Opens: coolant
Don't miss
- Drain the coolant fully before pulling the hoses; the bottom hose dumps what is left.
- Thermoswitch and fan connectors off before the radiator moves; the leads are short.
- Grille and air guides come out before the radiator bolts, not after.
- Radiator, cowling and fan leave as one unit; support the fan when lifting.
- Fill with coolant and run the engine to temperature to confirm the fan cuts in.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
