Removing and installing pump-valve unit, LHD vehicles: VW Phaeton
Step-by-step removing and installing pump-valve unit, LHD vehicles for the VW Phaeton: 22 steps, 3 torque figures.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Phaeton (3D)
- Opens: coolant
Don't miss
- Detach jump start connection wires to get access to pump-valve unit.
- Mark position of coolant hoses (A) and (B).
- The figure shows the arrangement for a 6-cylinder engine.
- Mark position of hoses on pump-valve unit.
- Running cooling system circulation pump V50 dry will destroy it.The coolant circulation pump V50 and the pump-valve unit may only be operated when the cooling system has been filled and bled.Do not switch ignition on.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 1.2 Nm (0.9 lb-ft) | Remove bolts (1 |
| 1.2 Nm (0.9 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts (1) to 12 ± |
| 2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft) | Tighten flange nuts (4) and (6) to 20 ± |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Release locks (arrows) by turning 90° and remove plenum chamber cover. [Note: Detach jump start connection wires to get access to pump-valve unit.]
- Disconnect batteries 27.
- Open cover (A) for jump start connection wires.
- Disconnect connection between starter wire (1), alternator wire (2) and supply line (3).
- Place drip trayVAS 6208 beneath engine.
- Drain cooling system 19.
- Remove windscreen wiper system 92.
- Remove cooling system expansion tank in plenum chamber (engine code: BAN).
- Mark position of coolant hoses (A) and (B).
- Separate coolant hoses (A) and (B) between engine and pump-valve unit.
- Hold coolant hose (B) into container. [Note: The figure shows the arrangement for a 6-cylinder engine.]
- Carefully blow coolant out of pump-valve unit via coolant hose (A) using compressed air gun.
- Mark position of hoses on pump-valve unit.
- Release coolant hoses from pump-valve unit.
- Disconnect connectors to pump-valve unit.
- Remove bolts (1) (12 ± 1.2 Nm). — 1.2 Nm (0.9 lb-ft)
- Release pump-valve unit from rubber bush (arrow). [Note: Running cooling system circulation pump V50 dry will destroy it.The coolant circulation pump V50 and the pump-valve unit may only be operated when the cooling system has been filled and bled.Do not switch ignition on.]
- Tighten bolts (1) to 12 ± 1.2 Nm. — 1.2 Nm (0.9 lb-ft)
- Ensure correct connection of coolant hoses to heat exchanger.
- Ensure correct connection of coolant hoses to engine. Observe markings. [Note: The coolant supply hose from engine cannot be seen in the figure as it is obstructed by hose (E).] [Note: The valves of the pump-valve-unit may be destroyed when the cooling system is being filled. The valves of the pump-valve-unit are closed when ignition is "“on”" and temperature preselection is "“cold”".For that reason, filling the system with "“ignition switched on”" would destroy the pump-valve unit. The ignition must always be switched off when filling the cooling system.]
- Fill cooling system 19.
- Tighten flange nuts (4) and (6) to 20 ± 2 Nm and flange nut (5) to 9 ± 0.9 Nm. — 2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
