Removing and installing oil pump drive chain, 1-part sprocket — VW
Removing and installing oil pump drive chain, 1-part sprocket on VW: 29 steps, 3 torque figures, engines AXZ, BHK, BHL, BLV.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Phaeton (3D)
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
Don't miss
- This position is only reached after every 4th turn.
- Loosen securing bolt for chain sprockets on oil pump (arrow). Do not unscrew yet. To do this, counterhold vibration damper using counterhold T10172.
- If the camshaft drive timing chain is not to be replaced, carefully mark installation of timing chain.
- If timing chain has already been used, note marking for direction of rotation.
- Fit chain sprocket onto oil pump shaft. The marked hole (arrow) must align with the mark on the oil pump.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | Install both pins without collar for guide rail and tighten |
| 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) | Using new securing bolts, tighten both chain sprockets (arrows) |
| 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) | Install lower chain tensioner and tighten |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove engine .
- Detach gearbox from engine.
- Remove sump .
- Remove drive plate .
- Remove sealing flange on gearbox side .
- Remove cylinder head cover .
- Turn engine by vibration damper to adjustment markings. [Note: This position is only reached after every 4th turn.]
- Loosen securing bolt for chain sprockets on oil pump (arrow). Do not unscrew yet. To do this, counterhold vibration damper using counterhold T10172.
- If the camshaft drive timing chain is to be replaced, remove timing chain .
- If the camshaft drive timing chain is not to be replaced, carefully mark installation of timing chain.
- Remove tensioner for timing chain (arrow).
- Detach chain tensioner with 3 mm Allan key (A).
- Remove chain tensioner for oil pump drive chain (arrows).
- Unscrew securing bolt (1) for chain sprockets completely and remove chain sprockets (2) with timing chain (3) from oil pump.
- Check that crankshaft is still at TDC.
- Install both pins without collar for guide rail and tighten to 10 Nm. Fit guide rail on studs. — 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft)
- Now set oil pump shaft (1) with flat side (arrow) horizontal to mark (2) on oil pump. [Note: If timing chain has already been used, note marking for direction of rotation.]
- Insert timing chain into guide rail and place on crankshaft.
- First, only fit the rear chain onto the large chain sprocket. When doing this, observe the previously made markings.
- Fit chain sprocket onto oil pump shaft. The marked hole (arrow) must align with the mark on the oil pump.
- If large chain sprocket cannot be fitted, turn oil pump shaft shaft slightly.
- Only if camshaft timing chain is still fitted: carefully pull sprocket off oil pump and swing upwards slightly. In this position, fit the camshaft timing chain. The marking made during removal must align.
- Fit chain sprocket onto oil pump shaft again and tighten hand-tight.
- Install lower chain tensioner and tighten to 8 Nm (arrows). — 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft)
- Remove Allan key (A).
- Install chain tensioner for camshaft timing chain (arrow).
- Recheck adjustment markings.
- Tighten new bolt (arrow) for chain sprockets. Specified torque . To do this, counterhold vibration damper using counterhold T10172. [Note: New chain sprocket bolt.]
- If the camshaft drive timing chain has been removed, install timing chain.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
