Removing and installing oil pump, 2-part sprocket: VW Phaeton (AXZ, BHK, BHL, BLV, …)
Step-by-step removing and installing oil pump, 2-part sprocket for the VW Phaeton: 31 steps, 5 torque figures.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Phaeton (3D)
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Renewed: o-ring, chain sprocket bolt
Don't miss
- Loosen bolt (arrow) for chain sprockets about 1 full turn, but do not yet unscrew fully. To do this, counterhold vibration damper using counterhold T10172.
- This position is only reached after every 4th turn.
- Carefully mark position of timing chains relative to chain sprockets of oil pump using a permanent marker. Marking is required when re-installing.
- Renew O-ring and seal.Insert securing bolts for oil pump with locking fluid.Renew chain sprocket bolt.
- Now turn oil pump shaft (1) with flat side (arrow) horizontal to mark (2) on oil pump.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) | Tighten chain sprockets |
| 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) | Tighten sprockets |
| 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) | Install chain tensioner in this position and tighten |
| 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) | Install oil pump and tighten securing bolts (arrows |
| 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) | Tighten oil pump with new securing bolts |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove engine .
- Detach gearbox from engine.
- Remove sump .
- Remove drive plate .
- Remove sealing flange on gearbox side .
- Loosen bolt (arrow) for chain sprockets about 1 full turn, but do not yet unscrew fully. To do this, counterhold vibration damper using counterhold T10172.
- Turn engine by vibration damper to adjustment markings. [Note: This position is only reached after every 4th turn.]
- Carefully mark position of timing chains relative to chain sprockets of oil pump using a permanent marker. Marking is required when re-installing.
- Remove chain tensioner for camshaft timing chain (arrow).
- Remove chain tensioner for oil pump drive chain (arrows).
- Unscrew securing bolt for chain sprockets completely and remove chain sprockets with timing chains from oil pump.
- Unscrew securing bolts for oil pump (arrows).
- Screw stud M10x30 (commercially available) (1) into oil pump shaft.
- Screw puller T10055 with adapter T10055/3 onto stud.
- Pull oil pump out of cylinder block with gentle striking motions. [Note: Renew O-ring and seal.Insert securing bolts for oil pump with locking fluid.Renew chain sprocket bolt.]
- Install oil pump and tighten securing bolts (arrows). Specified torque 8 Nm. — 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft)
- Check that crankshaft is still at TDC.
- Now turn oil pump shaft (1) with flat side (arrow) horizontal to mark (2) on oil pump.
- Insert timing chain into guide rail and place on crankshaft.
- Insert large chain sprocket into timing chain so that lug on chain sprocket aligns with marking behind (B).
- Fit chain sprocket onto oil pump shaft.
- If large chain sprocket cannot be fitted, turn oil pump slightly.
- Now install chain tensioner.
- To do this, release locking teeth of chain tensioner with a small screwdriver and press tensioning plate against chain tensioner.
- Install chain tensioner in this position and tighten to 8 Nm (arrows). — 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft)
- Insert small sprocket with timing chain fitted into recess (arrow). Marking made during removal must align again.
- Tighten securing bolt finger-tight.
- Check adjustment markings.
- Install chain tensioner for camshaft timing chain (arrow).
- Tighten chain sprockets to 60 Nm + a 90° (1/4 turn) further. To do this, counterhold vibration damper using counterhold T10172. — 60 Nm (44 lb-ft)
- Install sealing flange .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
