Removing and installing oil filter housing: VW Polo 6C (AYH, BAC, BAR, BGH, …)

Step-by-step removing and installing oil filter housing for the VW Polo 6C: 26 steps, 3 torque figures.

Removing the oil filter housing on the Polo 6C (2014–2017, platform 6C1) with the diesel engines listed is a crowded front-of-engine job. The air filter housing, a bracket, a cover, the air intake and the air duct with its exhaust gas recirculation pipe all come off first, then the dipstick tube. Coolant is drained, the right-hand wheel housing liner, electric coolant pump and noise insulation are removed, the poly V-belt comes off and the air conditioning compressor is unbolted and tied aside with its lines still connected. After the thermostat housing is pulled, the oil filter housing drops out downwards. Success depends on plugging the dipstick hole in the sump straight away and renewing every seal and O-ring on the way back.

🧭 Before you start

Clear the intake side (air filter housing, bracket, cover, air intake and air duct with EGR pipe) and remove the dipstick tube. Drain the coolant, take off the wheel housing liner, the electric coolant pump, noise insulation and poly V-belt, and hang the compressor out of the way with lines attached. Disconnect the N428 valve and other connectors, remove the thermostat housing and lower the oil filter housing out. Refit with new seals, bracket bolts evenly to 15 Nm, oil filter to 20 Nm and harness bracket to 10 Nm, then refill coolant.

Fits: VW Polo 6C (2014–2017)

  • Opens: coolant
  • Renewed: seals

Don't miss

  • Seal the dipstick tube hole in the sump with plugs once the tube is out, or coolant can get into the oil.
  • Leave refrigerant lines connected; unbolt the compressor and tie it up on the right side.
  • Renew all seals and O-rings and use production-standard hose clips.
  • Tighten oil filter bracket bolts evenly to 15 Nm and the oil filter to 20 Nm.
  • Keep a cloth under the thermostat housing to catch oil when it is pulled off.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step
10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft)Remove engine wiring harness bracket from beneath intake manifold (1
15 Nm (11 lb-ft)Install oil filter bracket and tighten bolts evenly
20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Tighten oil filter to specified torque

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

  1. Remove air duct with exhaust gas recirculation pipe. [Note: It is essential to seal the hole for the dipstick tube in the sump with sealing plugs after the dipstick tube has been removed. Otherwise coolant will get into the oil.]
  2. Unscrew bolt (1) for dipstick tube from sump.
  3. Cut open cable ties -3- at top and bottom of dipstick tube.
  4. Unscrew bolt (2) for dipstick tube from intake manifold, and pull out dipstick tube (1) upwards.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
