Removing and installing upper toothed belt guard — VW

Removing and installing upper toothed belt guard on VW: 28 steps, engines CKFC, CLHA, CLHB, CRBC. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing the upper toothed belt guard on these diesel engines (platform codes listed below) looks simple, but the guard is buried under the coolant expansion tank, the fuel filter and the reducing agent injector N474 on the emission control module. The fuel lines are disconnected at their plug-in connectors, the expansion tank is unclipped and laid on the engine, the fuel filter is unbolted and laid aside with lines connected, and the injector is removed with its coolant hoses still attached. The coolant lines are unclipped from the guard, and a metal line is bent carefully out of the way using a Torx screwdriver as a lever before the guard catches are released. Getting that line back to roughly 2.3 cm from the guard and bleeding the fuel system are what finish the job properly.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the engine cover, disconnect the fuel lines, lay the expansion tank and fuel filter on the engine, and move injector N474 aside with lines connected. Unclip the coolant lines, open the hose clip, bend the metal line upward and release the guard catches. Refit, bend the line back down to the specified clearance, seat all lines in their retainers and bleed the fuel system.

Fits: VW Passat B8 (3G, 2014–)

Don't miss

  • Leave the coolant hoses on the reducing agent injector; it is laid aside, not disconnected.
  • Bend the line only with a Torx screwdriver inserted, and gently.
  • Dimension between line and guard must be approx. 2.3 cm after refitting.
  • Left retainer must sit on its guide, and all lines must be seated in their retainers.
  • Bleed the fuel system before starting the engine.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
