Removing and installing mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox J743, gearbox removed — VW
Removing and installing mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox J743, gearbox removed on VW: 33 steps, 1 torque figure, engines CDLA, CDLC, CDLK.
Swapping the mechatronic unit J743 on the dual clutch gearbox of the engines listed below, on the platform codes listed (5C7, 5C1), is a bench job: the gearbox is already out. About 5.0 l of gear oil come out through the drain plug and the overflow pipe, which is refitted and torqued at 3 Nm. The gearbox cover and the gear oil pump cover come off, and both covers' gaskets and bolts are new on the way back. The unit is static-sensitive, so you touch an earthed object before handling it. The sender connector is released with the release tool, the oil line unclipped, and the ten bolts loosened in the specified sequence. Installation hinges on the sender arm: the unit is never lifted by it, it must locate in its fitting position on the dowel pin, and it must not strike the sender wheel.
🧭 Before you start
Draining is the drain plug and the overflow pipe, then the pipe is refitted, the filter removed if needed, and the gearbox and oil pump covers taken off. The sender connector is released with the release tool or, carefully, two screwdrivers, the line is freed from its clips, the bolts come out in sequence and the unit is lifted off. On installation the sender G182 with G509 must be in place, the O-rings are renewed if the old unit is being refitted and wetted with gear oil, the unit is set on the dowel pin with the sender arm in its position, new bolts are tightened in sequence, and the covers go on with new seals and new bolts, diagonally in stages. The gearbox is filled and the level set, then the basic adjustment of the mechatronic unit is carried out.
Fits: platform codes 5C7, 5C1
- Opens: gearbox oil
- Renewed: seal of gearbox cover
Don't miss
- Never lift the mechatronic unit by the sender arm or lay it on the arm.
- Touch an earthed object before handling; the unit is static-sensitive.
- Covers, gaskets and all cover and mechatronic bolts are renewed; bolts in the shown sequence.
- Reusing the old unit: both O-rings new, moistened with gear oil.
- Sender arm must not strike the sender wheel; check contact before bolting down.
- Fill and level the oil, then basic adjustment of J743 before the gearbox goes back in.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 3 Nm (2.2 lb-ft) | Screw in overflow pipe |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Position used oil collection and extraction unitV.A.G 1782 or a drip tray under gearbox.
- Remove oil drain and inspection plug (arrow) and drain gear oil.
- Remove this overflow pipe and drain remaining gear oil. [Note: About 5.0 l of gear oil will flow out. Leave used oil collection and extraction unitV.A.G 1782 or drip tray under gearbox.]
- Screw in overflow pipe and tighten it to specified torque.
- Remove the filter if necessary.
- Remove gearbox cover and gear oil pump cover. [Note: The cover of the gear oil pump, the bolts of the gear oil pump cover as well as the gasket and the bolts of the gearbox cover must always be renewed.]
- Before touching mechatronic unit, touch an earthed object again.
- Release connector (1) of gearbox input speed sender G182 and clutch temperature sender G509 using release tool T10465. [Note: If the release tool T10465 is not available, the connector can also be released carefully using 2 screwdrivers as follows:Only press onto locking mechanism with screwdriver (1). Do not use screwdriver as a lever.Use a screwdriver (2) to loosen the connector.Be very careful. The fastener of the connector can break. If this happens, the sender must be renewed.Do not pull on line!]
- Pull off connector.
- First pull line out of lower clip (arrow I).
- Then remove it from upper clip (arrow II) and lay to side. Do not kink line.
- Loosen securing bolts (1 … 10) in specified sequence and remove.
- Remove mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox J743.
- ⚠ Never lift mechatronic unit on »sender arm« or lay it on arm. — Before installation, make certain that gearbox input speed sender G182 with oil temperature sender in multi-plate clutch G509 is installed.
- Renew both (O-rings) if you reinstall the »old« mechatronic unit.
- Moisten O-rings with gear oil.
- Carefully set mechatronic unit on dowel pin (arrow). Ensure that »sender arm« locates in its (fitting position).
- Sender arm is not allowed to strike sender wheel.
- Do not pinch wiring.
- Look to see if mechatronic unit has made contact correctly.
- Screw in new bolts (1 … 10) by hand.
- Tighten bolts (1 ... 10) in the sequence indicated.
- Hook line (A) first in upper retaining lug, and then in lower (arrows).
- Push on connector and engage.
- Renew seal of gearbox cover.
- Clean sealing surface on gearbox.
- Ensure proper seating of seal.
- Place gearbox cover (A) over mechatronic unit, ensuring that no wiring is trapped in the process.
- Insert new bolts (arrows) and tighten diagonally in several stages.
- Set new oil pump cover (A) in place and tighten new bolts (arrows) diagonally in several stages.
- Top up oil, check level and top up .
- Connect .
- Conduct basic adjustment of mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox J743.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
