Removing and installing injection pump — VW
Removing and installing injection pump on VW: 61 steps, 8 torque figures, engines AGD, AHG, AKU, ASX.
This is the distributor-type injection pump on the belt-driven diesels AGD, AHG, AKU and ASX, on the platform codes listed below. The pump is driven by the same toothed belt as the camshaft, so the job is really a timing job: set the crankshaft to TDC on cylinder 1, lock the camshaft with adjustment bar 2065 A, take the engine mounting and lock carrier out of the way, slacken the tensioner and lift the belt off. The pump sprocket is locked with pin 2064 and pulled off its taper before the lines, connector and console bolts come off. Success depends on getting the camshaft locked square and both TDC references aligned before the belt goes back on, and on checking start of injection dynamically at the end.
🧭 Before you start
Set TDC with bar 2068 A and lock the camshaft with 2065 A, support the engine and remove the mounting and lock carrier. Release the belt, lock and pull the pump sprocket, disconnect lines and connector and unbolt the pump. On refit, centre the pump in its slots, set the sprocket nut to 55 Nm, re-time the camshaft sprocket, tension the belt (roller 20 Nm, camshaft bolt 45 Nm), turn the engine twice and recheck. Prime the pump through the return union with a hand vacuum pump, refit the mountings and check start of injection.
Fits: platform code 6N1
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: feeler gauge
Don't miss
- Never use adjustment bar 2065 A as a counterhold for the camshaft sprocket bolt; use counterhold 3036.
- Do not reshape the injection pipes; release them with ring spanner 3035.
- Notch and protrusion on the tensioner must face each other; if overshot, release fully and start again.
- Fill the pump through the return opening until fuel flows, but do not draw fuel into the vacuum pump.
- Expansion bolts on the engine mounting must not be reused.
- Start of injection is set dynamically with a diagnostic tester after assembly.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove filter/inlet connection connecting hose.
- Remove upper toothed belt guard and cylinder head cover.
- Turn crankshaft to TDC No. 1 cylinder (arrow).
- Install TDC adjustment bar2068 A as shown.
- Set TDC adjustment bar2068 A to 13.0 mm. The left notch of the vernier scale (arrow A) is the reference point.
- Turn crankshaft until flywheel TDC marking aligns with point of adjustment bar (arrow B).
- Lock camshaft with adjustment bar2065 A.
- Align adjustment bar2065 A as follows: Turn locked camshaft until one end of the adjustment bar2065 A contacts cylinder head. Measure clearance which has arisen at other end of adjustment bar2065 A with a feeler gauge. Slide a feeler gauge with half of clearance dimension between adjustment bar2065 A and cylinder head. Now turn camshaft until adjustment bar2065 A contacts feeler gauge. Now insert a second feeler gauge with the same dimension between adjustment bar2065 A and cylinder head at other end.
- Assemble and install support bracket10 - 222 A with frame10 - 222 A /1.
- Insert support bracket into lifting eye on left cylinder head and raise engine slightly.
- Remove bolts from engine assembly mounting (arrows) and remove complete assembly mounting.
- Remove lock carrier with attaching parts: General body repairs, exterior50Removing and installing lock carrier with attaching parts. [Note: Do not detach the coolant hoses.]
- Place lock carrier on the left longitudinal member and a suitable object, e.g. bucket. If necessary, secure lock carrier to prevent slipping off.
- Remove guide roller.
- Loosen nuts on belt tensioner (arrow).
- Remove bracket from cylinder block.
- Remove toothed belt from camshaft and injection pump toothed belt sprockets.
- Lock injection pump sprocket with locking pin2064.
- Unscrew injection pump sprocket securing nut.
- Loosen puller3032 arms and position puller3032.
- Align arms with bores on injection pump sprocket and tighten.
- Tension injection pump sprocket with puller3032.
- By tapping lightly on spindle of puller3032(arrow), loosen injection pump sprocket from injection pump taper (hold sprocket to prevent it from falling down).
- Unscrew all fuel lines from pump. [Note: Use ring spanner3035 to release injection pipes.Do not alter shape.]
- Cover openings with a clean cloth.
- Disconnect 10-pin injection pump connector and unclip connector from retainer.
- Unscrew securing bolts and nuts from console (arrows).
- Then remove securing bolt from rear support (arrow).
- Take off injection pump.
- Insert injection pump into console and then tighten securing bolt on rear support with conical nut first.
- Align injection pump to central position in console elongated holes and secure hand-tight. [Note: Commencement of injection is set dynamically using fault readerV.A.G 1551.]
- Install injection pump sprocket and lock with locking pin2064. When installing observe spring washer seating.
- Tighten securing nut to 55 Nm. — 55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- Loosen securing bolt of camshaft sprocket half a turn. To loosen securing bolt of camshaft sprocket, secure with counterhold3036. [Note: To loosen and tighten camshaft sprocket, never use adjustment bar2065 A as a counterhold! Use counterhold3036.]
- Release camshaft pulley from taper on camshaft by striking on punch (positioned through hole in toothed belt guard) with in a blow from a hammer.
- Take off camshaft sprocket.
- Check whether TDC mark on flywheel and reference mark are aligned.
- Place tooth belt on injection pump pulley and tensioning roller.
- Fit camshaft sprocket into toothed belt and secure sprocket to camshaft so that the sprocket can still turn.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
