Removing and installing high-voltage battery: VW Golf VI

Step-by-step removing and installing high-voltage battery for the VW Golf VI: 28 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This is the high-voltage battery removal on the platform code listed below, and it is work for a qualified high-voltage technician only. The system is de-energised and the 12V battery disconnected first, then the luggage compartment floor, breakdown kit and tools come out. From the boot side the equipotential bonding conductor, covers, high-voltage plug, fan and air duct are removed, the air ducts are masked with tape so nothing drops into the pack, and the battery fixings are released. Underneath, the panel comes off, plugs, earth conductor and coolant hoses are disconnected, and the battery is lowered on a scissor-type assembly platform with its supporting frame. The two things that decide it are the live-working qualification and clean, rust-free bonding contacts before re-energising and documenting the system.

28 steps

🧭 Before you start

De-energise the high-voltage system and disconnect the 12V battery. Clear the luggage compartment, remove the bonding conductor, covers, high-voltage plug, fan and air duct, mask the ducts and remove the gaskets and battery bolts. Underneath, set up the assembly platform with the supporting frame, remove the underbody panel, disconnect plugs, earth conductor and coolant hoses, bolt the frame to the battery and lower it. Clean the bonding contact surfaces before installation, then re-energise and document.

Fits: VW Golf VI (5K, 2008–2013)

  • Special tools named: VAS 6410

Don't miss

  • Only an electrically skilled person with live-working qualification may carry out this work.
  • Mask the battery air ducts with tape; nothing may fall into them.
  • Use the release tool on the high-voltage plugs rather than forcing them.
  • Bonding conductor contact surfaces must be clean, rust- and grease-free before installation.
  • Re-energise the high-voltage system and complete the documentation after refitting.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
