Removing and installing heat exchanger for high voltage batteryVX63 — VW

Removing and installing heat exchanger for high voltage batteryVX63 on VW: 8 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm.

Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

8 steps 1 torque figure

🧭 Before you start

Fits: VW Golf VI (5K, 2008–2013), VW Golf Cabriolet (517, 2011–2016)

  • Renewed: o-rings
  • Also covered elsewhere: Volkswagen Workshop Equipment catalogue

Don't miss

  • After installing heat exchanger for high voltage batteryVX63, bleed coolant circuit. Information about bleeding the coolant circuit is available from the E-field service team.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Observe instructions when working on refrigerant circuit .
  2. Observe general warning instructions for work on high voltage system . [Note: Bleed the coolant circuit if it has been opened. Information about bleeding the coolant circuit is available from the E-field service team.If the drive motor is warm, then the cooling system is pressurised. If necessary, release pressure before carrying out repairs.] [Note: The refrigerant must be extracted beforehand, with the air conditioning service station. The previously used air conditioner service stations can still be used ⇒ Volkswagen Workshop Equipment catalogue. To prevent the intrusion of moisture, all components of the refrigerant circuit which have been opened must be sealed with suitable plugs.]
  3. Clamp off coolant hoses using hose clamps up to 40 mm3093.
  4. Detach clips (1) and pull off coolant hoses from heat exchanger for high voltage batteryVX63(2).
  5. Remove bolts (4).
  6. Pull out refrigerant lines (5) from heat exchanger for high voltage batteryVX63(2).
  7. Unscrew bolts (3) (3 ± 0.3 Nm) and remove heat exchanger for high voltage batteryVX63(2). [Note: After installing heat exchanger for high voltage batteryVX63, bleed coolant circuit. Information about bleeding the coolant circuit is available from the E-field service team.] — 0.3 Nm (0.2 lb-ft)
  8. Always renew O-rings and moisten them with refrigerant oil. [Note: Refrigerant shutoff valve for air conditioning system N541 and refrigerant shutoff valve for heat exchanger of high voltage battery N542 must be open for filling and extraction of refrigerant. When filling and extracting refrigerant, a voltage of 12V must be applied to the shutoff valves.]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
