Removing and installing front propshaft — VW
Removing and installing front propshaft on VW: factory workshop procedure. Full factory text, tools and checks.
Workshop procedure for VW — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
ℹ️ Torque figures below come verbatim from workshop data — always cross-check against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening.
Removing and installing front propshaft
Special tools and workshop equipment required
Torque wrench
V.A.G 1331
Brake pedal actuator
V.A.G 1869/2
Bits
T10099
Removing
Before removing, mark positions of all parts relative to each other. Reinstall in same position to prevent damage through imbalance causing rumbling noises.
A twin pillar lifting platform should be used when working on the propshaft.
Fit brake pedal actuator
V.A.G 1869/2.
Depress brake pedal using brake pedal actuator
V.A.G 1869/2.
Raise vehicle.
Vehicles with 6-cylinder petrol engine
Remove heat shield (arrow) from bevel box.
Continuation for all vehicles
Check whether a mark (coloured spot) is present on front propshaft and on output flange of bevel box.
If no such mark can be found, mark position of bevel box output flange arrow A relative to propshaft constant velocity joint arrow B with coloured marks.
Check whether a mark (coloured spot) is present on front and middle propshafts.
If no such marks can be found, mark position of parts arrow A and arrow B relative to each other with coloured marks.
Unscrew lower 3 securing bolts from front/middle propshafts.
Unscrew lower 3 securing bolts from front propshaft/bevel box.
Lower vehicle.
Remove
brake pedal actuator
V.A.G 1869/2.
Raise vehicle.
Turn both rear wheels in the same direction at the same time so that the propshaft rotates (1)
/ (2) turn (180°).
Lower vehicle.
Fit brake pedal actuator
V.A.G 1869/2.
Depress brake pedal using brake pedal actuator.
Raise vehicle.
Unscrew remaining 3 securing bolts and remove front propshaft.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
Always renew securing bolts for propshaft.
Ensure that marks on flange of front and middle propshafts arrow A and arrow B align.
Ensure that marks on bevel box output flange arrow A and on propshaft constant velocity joint arrow B align.
First screw all securing bolts into constant velocity joints.
Tighten lower 3 securing bolts on each constant velocity joint of propshaft.
Lower vehicle, remove brake pedal actuator
V.A.G 1869/2 and turn propshaft (1)
/ (2) turn (180°) further.
Depress brake pedal using brake pedal actuator
V.A.G 1869/2.
Raise vehicle.
Tighten remaining 3 securing bolts on each constant velocity joint of propshaft.
Vehicles with 6-cylinder petrol engine
Install heat shield (arrow) on bevel box.
Specified torques (see “Assembly overview - two section propshaft”) (see “Assembly overview - three section propshaft”)
Component
Specified torque
Heat shield on bevel box
15 Nm

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
