Removing and installing front expansion valve: VW Touareg II
Step-by-step removing and installing front expansion valve for the VW Touareg II: 11 steps, 3 torque figures.
Renewing the front expansion valve on the VW Touareg II (7P, 2010–2018) on the hybrid variants with a high-voltage system. Follow the high-voltage safety precautions before work begins, and comply with the refrigerant circuit notes. The refrigerant is extracted with an air conditioning service station, then the plenum chamber cover is removed to reach the valve. The refrigerant lines are held to the valve by bolts at 10 Nm; with those out, the lines pull away. The valve is then unbolted and lifted off, taking care not to bend its retaining plate. On refit, renew the O-rings and the affected refrigerant pipes. A reused O-ring or a bent plate are the usual reasons for a slow leak afterwards.
🧭 Before you start
Observe high-voltage and refrigerant precautions, extract the refrigerant and remove the plenum chamber cover. Unbolt the refrigerant lines from the expansion valve, then unbolt and remove the valve without damaging the retaining plate. Refit with new O-rings and refrigerant pipes, tighten the line bolts to 10 Nm, then evacuate and recharge the system.
Fits: VW Touareg II (7P, 2010–2018)
Don't miss
- Observe high-voltage safety precautions and risk category before starting.
- Extract refrigerant with a service station before opening any line.
- Renew O-rings (4) and (5) and the refrigerant pipes.
- Do not damage the retaining plate when removing the valve.
- Leak-test the circuit after recharging, as is normal workshop practice.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 1 Nm (0.7 lb-ft) | Unscrew bolts (1 |
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | Unscrew bolts (1 |
| 5 Nm (3.7 lb-ft) | Unscrew bolts (8 |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
