Removing and installing front exhaust pipe — VW

Removing and installing front exhaust pipe on VW: 14 steps, engines CAVA, CAVD, CAWB, CBFA. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This covers the front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter on the platform codes listed below (5C7 and 5C1), across a long list of petrol engine codes running from CAVA through to CUUB. The pipe is bolted to the turbocharger outlet with nuts reached partly from above and partly from below, so the work alternates between the engine bay and the underside. Expect to unplug and route aside the Lambda probe G39 wiring, separate further connectors on the underbody, drop the underbody cover slightly, remove the exhaust bracket and the front tunnel bridge, then free the clamp and lower the assembly. What decides the outcome is the decoupling element: it must never be bent more than 10°, its wire mesh is easily damaged, and it must sit free of tension when refitted.

14 steps 40 engine codes engine codes merged from 20 documented variants

🧭 Before you start

Unplug the Lambda probe G39 and remove the upper turbocharger nuts from above. Underneath, take off the noise insulation, remove the lower turbo nuts, ease the underbody cover down, separate the probe and underbody connectors and unbolt the exhaust bracket and front tunnel bridge. Loosen the clamp, push it rearwards and lower the front pipe complete with the catalytic converter. Refit in reverse, leaving the decoupling element unstressed.

Fits: platform codes 5C7, 5C1

Don't miss

  • Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°, and keep it supported while the pipe is loose.
  • Protect the wire mesh on the decoupling element; damage there means a replacement.
  • Lay the Lambda probe wiring clear before lowering the pipe so it is not stretched.
  • Install the decoupling element with no tension in it; align the system before final tightening.
  • Turbocharger flange nuts are usually renewed as standard practice because they are exposed to high heat.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
