Removing and installing fog light, Jetta — VW

Removing and installing fog light, Jetta on VW: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Changing a fog light on the Jetta (platform code 162) is done from the front of the bumper without removing the bumper cover. With the ignition off, all consumers off and the key out, the trim cover over the lamp is released from its engaging elements, the screw behind it is undone, and the fog light housing is swivelled out of the bumper cover. The wiring is short, so the housing is eased out only as far as the lead allows before the connector is released and the lamp lifted away. What finishes the job properly is the torque on the screw, taken from the specified value, and the beam setting: after any fog light is refitted it is checked and adjusted, because the housing seats on the screw and the bumper and a small tilt is enough to put the beam in the wrong place.

8 steps

🧭 Before you start

Switch everything off and remove the key, unclip the cover, undo the screw and swivel the fog light housing out of the bumper cover, watching the wire length. Release the connector and remove the housing. On refitting the screw is tightened to the specified torque and the fog light setting is checked and adjusted.

Fits: VW Jetta VI (16, 2010–2018)

Don't miss

  • Ignition off, all electrical consumers off and key removed before unclipping the cover.
  • Release cover (1) from its engaging elements; do not pull it off by the edge.
  • Swivel the housing out only as far as the wire allows before unplugging.
  • Tighten the screw to the specified torque, then check and adjust the fog light setting.
  • General practice: handle the lamp by its housing; grease or fingerprints on the lens spoil the beam.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
