Removing and installing fog light, Golf — VW

Removing and installing fog light, Golf on VW: 9 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the Golf VII (5G1, 2012–2020) the front fog light is changed from inside the wheel arch rather than through the bumper. With the ignition off, the key out and the light switch at 0, the wheel housing liner is pulled back or removed to expose the back of the bumper cover. The fog light is held by bolts; once they are out it swings out of position and is drawn out of the bumper cover, and the connector is unplugged. It is a short job. Afterwards the beam must be adjusted, because a new fog light or a disturbed mounting rarely sits at the same aim, and an incorrectly aimed fog light dazzles oncoming drivers.

9 steps

🧭 Before you start

Switch off the ignition, remove the key and set the light switch to 0. Remove the wheel housing liner, unscrew the fog light bolts, swing the lamp out and pull it out of the bumper cover, then unplug it. Fit in reverse and adjust the fog light aim.

Fits: VW Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020)

Don't miss

  • Switch off the ignition and set the light switch to 0 before unplugging the lamp.
  • Swing the lamp out in the direction shown before pulling; do not lever it against the bumper.
  • Make sure the connector locks fully; moisture gets into a half-seated plug.
  • Adjust the fog light aim after fitting.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
