📋 Procedure

  1. Observe safety precautions Safety precautions when handling refrigerants.
  2. Comply with notes Working on refrigerant circuit.
  3. Observe safety precautions when working on the high-voltage system Safety precautions when working on high-voltage system.
  4. Observe safety precautions when working in the vicinity of high-voltage components Safety precautions when working in the vicinity of high-voltage components.
  5. Observe the risk category of the high-voltage system 00Risk category of the high-voltage system. [Note: The refrigerant must be extracted using the air conditioner service station. The previously used air conditioner service stations can still be used ⇒ Volkswagen Workshop Equipment catalogue. To prevent the intrusion of moisture, all components of the refrigerant circuit which have been opened must be sealed with suitable plugs. The connecting pipe from charge air cooler must be removed on some vehicles 21Charge air system; Assembly overview - charge air system.]

  1. Remove air pipes in front of expansion valve.
  2. Detach bracket (A) for coolant valve for high-voltage battery N688 from plenum chamber bulkhead.
  3. Unscrew speed nuts (1) and (3).
  4. Fold the heat shield (2) as far forwards as possible (arrow).
  5. Extract refrigerant.
  6. Remove nuts (1) and (3) from the refrigerant line with the internal heat exchanger [Note: This illustration shows the configuration for vehicles without high-voltage system. On vehicles with high-voltage system, the refrigerant shut-off valve for heater and air conditioner unit N541 is installed in the refrigerant line - high-pressure side Removing and installing refrigerant shut-off valve for heater and air conditioner unit N541.If necessary disconnect connector for N541.]
  7. Remove bolt (7).
  8. Pull refrigerant line with internal heat exchanger off expansion valve.
  9. Remove bolts (1) and (3).
  10. Carefully pull expansion valve (4) out of heat insulation (2).
  11. Seal off open lines and connections with clean plugs from engine bung setVAS 6122.
  12. Renew seals. For versions, refer to Electronic Parts Catalogue.
  13. Fit seals (1) and (4) on connecting pipes (2) and (3) leading to evaporator.
  14. Press refrigerant pipe (2) by hand into expansion valve.
  15. Start bolt (1) by hand and only then tighten to specified torque. [Note: There are different versions of the expansion valve (identical housing, but different control characteristic). For correct version refer to Electronic Parts Catalogue.Check refrigerant pipes leading to evaporator for dirt and damage.Moisten seals with refrigerant oil before installing.Ensure seals are properly seated on connecting pipes of evaporator. If heat insulation (2) is missing or improperly installed, it may lead to reduced performance of the air conditioning system (due to changes in the set mapped values through heat radiation).]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
