Removing and installing expansion valve, e-Golf — VW

Removing and installing expansion valve, e-Golf on VW: 15 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Renewing the expansion valve on the e-Golf (platform BE1) means opening the refrigerant circuit on a high-voltage car, so both sets of safety precautions apply before a tool goes near it: those for air conditioning work and those for work near high-voltage components. The refrigerant is extracted with the air conditioning service station first. One bolt then releases the refrigerant lines, which are pulled off the valve, and two more bolts free the valve itself. Every open line and port is plugged straight away with clean bungs to keep moisture out. On assembly the seals are renewed and moistened with refrigerant oil, the valve bolted in and the lines pushed home. Clean, dry connections and correctly seated seals decide whether the system holds its charge.

15 steps

🧭 Before you start

Observe the air conditioning and high-voltage safety precautions, then extract the refrigerant. Unscrew the line bolt, pull both refrigerant lines off the expansion valve, remove the two valve bolts and take the valve out. Plug all open connections, check the evaporator pipes for dirt and damage, and renew the seals. Fit the valve, tighten its bolts to specified torque, join and insert the lines, and start the line bolt by hand before tightening it.

Don't miss

  • Extract the refrigerant with the service station before undoing anything.
  • Plug every opened line and port immediately with clean bungs to keep moisture out.
  • Renew the seals and moisten them with refrigerant oil; check they sit properly on the evaporator pipes.
  • Start the line bolt (4) by hand before tightening, to avoid cross-threading.
  • Evacuate, recharge and leak-test the circuit after assembly, as general practice.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
