Removing and installing engine control unit J623 (Sharan) — VW
Removing and installing engine control unit J623 (Sharan) on VW: 13 steps, engines CAVA, CAVB, CAVC, CAVD.
The engine control unit J623 on the Sharan II (7N1, 2010–) sits under the plenum chamber at the base of the windscreen, behind the bulkhead panel. Covered here for the petrol and diesel codes listed, CAVA to CTKA. Getting at it means removing the wiper arms, the plenum chamber cover and then the plenum chamber bulkhead. The unit is raised at the front and pulled forwards out of its side guides, and the two connectors are released by sliding their locking devices before being pulled off. If the unit is being renewed rather than just removed for access, the guided function for renewing the engine control unit has to be started with the diagnostic tester before anything is disconnected. Ignition off throughout, and the connector locks must click fully home on refit.
🧭 Before you start
If renewing the unit, start the guided function first. Switch off the ignition, remove the wiper arms, plenum chamber cover and bulkhead. Lift the control unit at the front, pull it out of the side guides, slide the connector locks and pull off both plugs. Refit by attaching and locking the connectors, pushing the unit into its guides and reinstalling bulkhead, cover and wiper arms.
Fits: VW Sharan II / SEAT Alhambra (7N, 2010–)
- Renewed: engine control unit
Don't miss
- Run the guided function before disconnecting if the control unit is being renewed.
- Switch off the ignition before unplugging the control unit.
- Slide the connector locking devices fully inwards until they engage.
- Check wiper arm park position after refitting, as normal practice.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
