Removing and installing E-box on left side of engine compartment (engine compartment E-box) — VW

Removing and installing E-box on left side of engine compartment (engine compartment E-box) on VW: 24 steps, 3 torque figures.

The engine compartment E-box on the left side of the Golf Cabriolet 2011–2016 (517) carries the main fuses and the multiple fuse feeding big consumers such as the electromechanical power steering, so the battery is disconnected first. The cover is released at its safety clip and lifted off, and the connection of each wire to its bolt is marked before anything is undone. Once the hexagon nuts on the wire connections have been loosened, the multiple fuse is damaged and must be renewed; that is the rule that catches people out. After the central bolt is removed the box lifts off its holder. Fixings go back at 4 Nm for M5 nuts, 6 Nm for M6 and 9 Nm for the central bolt.

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the battery, remove the E-box cover, mark the wire assignments and open the cable guide covers. Remove the wires from the bolts, unclip the wiring, renew the multiple fuse, unscrew the central bolt and lift the box off. To remove the holder, take out the air filter housing (diesel), battery and tray, slide out both flat contact housings, undo the nuts and unclip the additional relay carrier. Refit with M5 nuts at 4 Nm, M6 nuts at 6 Nm and the central bolt at 9 Nm, then make sure the cover engages.

Fits: VW Golf Cabriolet (517, 2011–2016)

Don't miss

  • Mark which wire goes on which connection point before removing anything.
  • Renew the multiple fuse whenever its hexagon nuts have been loosened.
  • M5 nuts (AF 8 mm) to 4 Nm, M6 nuts (AF 10 mm) to 6 Nm.
  • Central bolt of the electronics box to 9 Nm.
  • Check the cover has properly engaged after pushing the securing bow home.

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ To disconnect and reconnect the battery, the procedure described in the workshop manual should be strictly adhered to . — Disconnect battery .
  2. Push safety clip (1) in (direction of arrow) and remove cover from E-box (2) upwards. [Note: Mark assignment of connected lines to connection points on electronics box.]
  3. ⚠ Electrical components that are protected by the multiple fuse may fail, e.g. the electromechanical power steering! The multiple fuse will be damaged when the hexagon nuts of wire connections are loosened! The multiple fuse must be renewed after any loosening of the connections! — Unscrew hexagon nuts (1).
  4. Open cable guide covers of E-box (3) in (direction of arrow).
  5. Remove wires from connecting bolts.

  1. Unclip wiring from wiring guides.
  2. Renew multiple fuse (2) after loosening hexagon nuts (1). [Note: The following illustration shows the "“High”" version of the E-box. Removing and installing the "“Low”" version is performed in the same manner.]
  3. Unscrew central bolt (arrow) of E-box (1). [Note: When the central bolt (arrow) is removed, the E-box (1) is pushed upwards off the E-box holder.]
  4. Pull E-box (1) upwards off bracket of E-box. [Note: To remove the flat contact housing (1), the air filter housing (on vehicles with diesel engine only), the battery and the battery tray must first be removed.]
  5. If necessary, remove air filter housing.
  6. Remove battery .
  7. Undo and remove bolts (arrows) of battery tray (1).
  8. Remove battery tray (1) from vehicle.
  9. Push apart tabs on bracket of E-box (arrows B) and slide out flat contact housing (1) sideways (arrow A) from bracket of E-box.
  10. Push apart tabs on bracket of E-box (arrows C) and slide out flat contact housing (2) forwards (arrow D) from bracket of E-box.
  11. Undo nuts (arrows) from bracket of E-box (1). [Note: The installation of an additional relay carrier depends on the vehicle equipment.]
  12. Pull electronics box bracket (1) upwards off studs, taking connected line lengths into consideration.
  13. Unclip additional relay carrier (1) sideways out of bracket of E-box (2).
  14. Remove E-box (2)retainer from vehicle.
  15. ⚠ Electrical components that are protected by the multiple fuse may fail, e.g. the electromechanical power steering! The multiple fuse will be damaged when the hexagon nuts of wire connections are loosened! The multiple fuse must be renewed after any loosening of the connections! — Reconnect lines (1) to electronics box as per assignment marked before removal .
  16. Tighten securing nuts (1) M5 (AF 8 mm) to 4 Nm. — 4 Nm (3.0 lb-ft)
  17. Tighten securing nuts (1) M6 (AF 10 mm) to 6 Nm. — 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft)
  18. Tighten central bolt of electronics box to 9 Nm. — 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft)
  19. Place cover (2) onto electronics box and push securing bow (1) in (direction of arrow) until cover (2) engages. [Note: Then check whether the cover (2) of the E-box is engaged correctly.]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
