Removing and installing defroster and air distribution flap actuator (LHD) — VW

Removing and installing defroster and air distribution flap actuator (LHD) on VW: 7 steps, 1 torque figure.

Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

7 steps 1 torque figure

🧭 Before you start

Don't miss

  • Screws (2) should be removed using a commercially available offset screwdriver for cross-head screws (bit arm length max. 20 mm).
  • Before installing, check that positions (A) are in line with flap mountings.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step
1.5 Nm (1.1 lb-ft)Unscrew bolts (2

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove heater and air conditioner unit (see the separate procedure).
  2. Remove flexible shaft (3) from actuator (1).
  3. Unscrew bolts (2) (1.5 Nm). [Note: Screws (2) should be removed using a commercially available offset screwdriver for cross-head screws (bit arm length max. 20 mm).] — 1.5 Nm (1.1 lb-ft)
  4. Swivel actuator (1) in direction of arrow (A) and remove it.
  5. Install in reverse order. [Note: Before installing, check that positions (A) are in line with flap mountings.] [Note: It must be possible to move the defroster and air distribution flap actuator to its end positions easily and smoothly. Switch fresh air blower to highest speed: if air flows out of the defroster vent when "“Defrost”" has been selected, and not out of the footwell vent, this means that the flexible shaft has been installed correctly. Otherwise, remove the flexible shaft from the heating and air conditioning controls, turn control knob 1/2 rotation (180°) and refit the flexible shaft. Repeat check.]
  6. Remove actuator and repeat installation, as described.
  7. The remaining steps for installation are carried out in reverse order.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
