Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Passat B5 (3B)
- Opens: brake fluid
- Renewed: cylinder head cover, cylinder head cover gasket
Don't miss
- All cable ties which are released or cut open when removing must be fitted in the same position when installing.
- Press buttons on hose couplings to do this.
- Renew cylinder head cover if damaged or leaking.Renew cylinder head cover gasket if damaged or leaking.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | Tighten securing bolts in illustrated sequence |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the cramped conditions:Route all the various lines (e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, activated charcoal filter system, coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum) and electrical wiring in their original positions.Ensure that there is sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components. — Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers and remove key.
- With the ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap.
- All cable ties which are released or cut open when removing must be fitted in the same position when installing.
- Remove engine cover.
- Pull the hoses for the crankcase breather on the pressure regulating valve and on the cylinder head covers . [Note: Press buttons on hose couplings to do this.]
- Remove intake pipe between air mass meter G70 and throttle valve module J338.
- Remove upper part of intake manifold (along with both intake manifold side parts) . [Note: When removing upper part of intake manifold, ensure that the dowel pins are in the lower part of the intake manifold and that they do not drop into the intake ports!Seal intake ports in the lower part of intake manifold using a clean cloth.]
- Remove ignition coils with output stage.
- Remove cylinder head cover. [Note: Renew cylinder head cover if damaged or leaking.Renew cylinder head cover gasket if damaged or leaking.]
- Clean sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.
- Apply sealantD 176 404 A2 as shown to clean sealing surfaces between cylinder and cover on both sides. [Note: Observe expiry date of sealing compound.Cylinder head cover must be installed within 5 minutes of applying sealant.]
- Install cylinder head cover immediately and tighten all securing bolts hand-tight.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
