Removing and installing coolant valve for gearbox N488, vehicles with dual clutch gearbox — VW

Removing and installing coolant valve for gearbox N488, vehicles with dual clutch gearbox on VW: 11 steps, engines CHHA, CHHB, CJSA, CJSB.

The coolant valve for gearbox N488 controls coolant flow to the dual clutch gearbox and sits low on the gearbox, behind the charge air pipework. This page covers the Golf VII (5G) and Golf VII Variant (BA5), Sharan II/Alhambra (7N) and Passat B8 (3G) with the engine codes listed below. Access starts underneath with the noise insulation and on top with the air filter housing; the wiring harnesses are freed and laid aside and the charge air hose comes out downwards together with its air pipe. Clamping the coolant hoses with hose clamps 3094 before releasing them is what keeps the job clean, and a cloth over the gearbox openings stops coolant reaching the clutch housing. The valve is held by nuts, and the coolant level is checked after refitting.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the noise insulation and air filter housing, free the harnesses, loosen the screw-type clip and bolts, and take the charge air hose out downwards with the air pipe. Unplug N488, clamp both coolant hoses with tool 3094, cover the gearbox openings, release the hose clips and unscrew the nuts to remove the valve. Refit with the correct original-type hose clips and check the coolant level.

Fits: VW Golf VII Variant (BA), VW Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020), VW Sharan II / SEAT Alhambra (7N, 2010–), VW Passat B8 (3G, 2014–)

Don't miss

  • Clamp the coolant hoses on N488 with hose clamps 3094 before releasing the clips.
  • Cover the gearbox openings with a cloth so no coolant enters the clutch housing.
  • Secure all hose connections with the same type of clips as original equipment.
  • Check the coolant level after installation.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
