Removing and installing turbocharger, Sharan — VW

Removing and installing turbocharger, Sharan on VW: 25 steps, engines CHHA, CHHB, CJSA, CJSB. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Taking the turbocharger out of the Sharan II (7N2) with the CHHA, CJSA, CJXA, CNTA or DEDA petrol engines is mostly an exercise in clearing the underside. The turbo comes out downwards, which means the subframe has to drop and the right drive shaft has to come out, along with the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter and its bracket. From above, the air filter housing, charge air pipe, Lambda probe GX10, heat shield, oil supply pipe and coolant pipe are removed after the coolant is drained. Below, the turbo bracket, the second coolant pipe and the oil return pipe follow before the nuts come off. Sealing every opening with bungs as you go is what keeps dirt out of the oil and charge air paths.

25 steps 8 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Drain coolant and remove the engine cover, air filter housing, charge air pipe and Lambda probe. Disconnect the upper coolant pipe, heat shield, oil supply pipe, hoses, connectors and breather hose. Loosen the right hub bolt, remove the subframe without the steering rack, the right drive shaft, front exhaust pipe with cat and its bracket, then the turbo bracket, lower coolant pipe, oil return pipe and heater hose. Remove the nuts, lower the turbo out and seal it with bungs.

Fits: VW Sharan II / SEAT Alhambra (7N, 2010–)

  • Opens: coolant

Don't miss

  • Loosen the right drive shaft hub bolt before the subframe comes down.
  • The turbo comes out downwards; subframe and right drive shaft must be removed first.
  • Seal the turbocharger and open lines with engine bung set VAS 6122.
  • Bracket (2) under the turbo: unscrew bolt (1) but only loosen bolt (3).
  • Drain coolant first; two coolant pipes and a heater hose are opened during removal.
  • Renew turbo gaskets and seals on refitting as standard practice for any opened oil or exhaust joint.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
