Removing and installing charge air cooling pump V188: VW Passat B8 (CHPA, CJZA, CJZB, CJZC, …)

Step-by-step removing and installing charge air cooling pump V188 for the VW Passat B8: 22 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Charge air cooling pump V188 on the Passat B8 (3G2/3G5) circulates coolant through the separate charge air cooling circuit and its own water radiator, and this page covers the engine codes listed below in several mounting layouts. The pump is reached from underneath once the noise insulation is off. Its connector is unplugged, the wiring harness unclipped, and the coolant hoses to the radiator and to the charge air cooling radiator are released from their retainers; the pump then comes away either with its bracket on two bolts or, on the other layout, after the bolt on the retaining arm is undone and the arm opened. Expect coolant: a cloth or the hoist drip tray goes underneath, and where hoses are detached at the pump they are clamped off first with hose clamps up to 25 mm. On refitting, the projection on the rubber bracket must sit in the groove of the retaining arm, and the coolant level is checked at the end.

🧭 Before you start

Noise insulation off, drip tray or cloth under the pump, connector and harness released. Depending on the layout, the coolant hoses are either left on the pump and freed from their retainers, or clamped off with hose clamps up to 25 mm, the hose clips released and the hoses pulled. The pump is removed with its bracket after the two bolts are undone, or lifted out after the retaining arm is opened. Installation reverses this, with the retaining arm attached to the bracket at the bottom, hose connections secured with clips to production standard, and the coolant level checked.

Fits: VW Passat B8 (3G, 2014–)

  • Special tools named: 3094

Don't miss

  • Clamp hoses (1) and (5) with clamps up to 25 mm before releasing the clips; coolant drains otherwise.
  • Place a cloth or the hoist drip tray under the pump before unplugging it.
  • Projection on the rubber bracket must sit in the groove of the retaining arm.
  • Attach the retaining arm to the bracket at the bottom before closing it.
  • Secure all hose connections with hose clips to production standard.
  • Check the coolant level once everything is back together.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
