Removing and installing battery tray, battery in luggage compartment — VW
Removing and installing battery tray, battery in luggage compartment on VW: 10 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
On the VW Polo 6C (2014–2017, platform 6C) with the battery in the luggage compartment, the battery tray is bonded to the spare wheel well with adhesive sealant, and it comes out the way a bonded window does. Battery out, a cutting cord is pulled through the sealant into the interior with an awl, anchored on the pull handle, laid around the tray and the second end brought inside and fixed to the flush-bonded-window removal kit. A wedge keeps the cord against the tray while cutting to clear the wheel well. Afterwards the old bead is cut back with the U-shaped blade but not removed, because that remainder is the base the new sealant bonds to. Keep it clean, no cleaning solution, no primer, and activator only if bonding happens later than one day after cutting back.
🧭 Before you start
With the battery out, the cutting cord is threaded through the sealant into the interior, fixed to the pull handle at one end and the removal kit at the other, and worked around the tray with a wedge holding it against the tray. The tray is cut out and the remaining bead on the wheel well cut back with the U-shaped blade without removing it. The tray is bonded in with window adhesive, with activator only when bonding is more than one day after cutting back, and the battery refitted.
Fits: VW Polo 6C (2014–2017)
Don't miss
- Leave the cut-back bead in place; it is the adhesion base for the new sealant.
- No cleaning solution, no primer, and no activator immediately after cutting back.
- Bonding later than one day after cutting back: activator, evenly, one stroke, approx. 10 minutes drying.
- Activator must not touch paint; it damages the paintwork structure.
- Keep dirt and grease off every bonding surface.

📋 Procedure
- Remove battery .
- Pull cutting cord through adhesive sealant into vehicle interior using awlV.A.G 1474/2.
- Secure end of cutting cord on pull handleV.A.G 1351/1 to prevent it from being pulled out.
- Lay cutting cord around battery tray, and guide second end of cord inwards into vehicle interior.
- Secure end of cutting cord to removal kit for flush bonded windowsVAS 6452.
- Use wedgeV.A.G 1474/5 to press cutting cord against battery tray while cutting in order to gain clearance at spare wheel well.
- Cut out battery tray.
- ⚠ Keep dirt and grease off bonding surfaces.Do not treat bonding surface with activator immediately after cutting back. Do not prime. Do not treat bonding surface with a cleaning solution. — Cut back remaining material on spare wheel well using U-shaped bladeV.A.G 1561/3, but do not remove it completely. [Note: The remaining material serves as adhesion base for newly applied adhesive sealant. Keep dirt and grease off bonding surfaces.]
- ⚠ Exception: if bonding is performed later than one day after cutting back the adhesive bead, the remaining material must be activated with activator.Using an applicator apply the activator evenly and in one stroke. The activator must not come in contact with paint. Otherwise the paintwork structure will be damaged. The drying time is approx. 10 minutes. — Bond in battery tray using window adhesive Electronic Parts Catalogue.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
