Removing and installing battery isolation relay J7: VW Phaeton

Step-by-step removing and installing battery isolation relay J7 for the VW Phaeton: 10 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

The Phaeton (3D2) has a battery isolation relay J7 next to the second battery on the left in the luggage compartment, and with it a pyrotechnic battery isolator. That makes the battery sequence the whole point of this job: disconnect and reconnect strictly in the order the workshop manual specifies, or the igniter capsule can fire and damage the electrics. Once the batteries are safely disconnected, the left second battery is removed, the relay connector pulled, the relay unbolted from its bracket, the protective caps folded open and the wiring removed from the relay terminals. Installation is the reverse, with the threaded connections tightened to the specified torques before the battery goes back in. The terminal clamp bolt notes apply on reconnection.

10 steps

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the batteries in the prescribed sequence, remove the second battery on the left in the luggage compartment, pull the connector off J7 and unscrew the nuts holding it to its bracket. Fold open the protective caps and remove the wiring nuts. Refit the wiring and relay, tighten the threaded connections to the specified torques, refit the battery and reconnect following the prescribed sequence.

Fits: VW Phaeton (3D)

Don't miss

  • Follow the battery disconnect and reconnect sequence exactly; the isolator igniter can be triggered otherwise.
  • Tighten relay terminal connections to the specified torques.
  • Close the protective caps over the terminals after refitting.
  • Observe the notes for the battery terminal clamp bolt on reconnection.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
