Removing and installing alternator for 2.0 l 4-cylinder diesel engine — VW
Removing and installing alternator for 2.0 l 4-cylinder diesel engine on VW: 15 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
On the 2.0 l four-cylinder diesel, on the platform code listed below, the alternator comes out from above once the engine cover and the poly V-belt are off. The battery is disconnected, the dipstick pulled, the cover lifted and slid forwards, and the belt tensioner swung with a 16 mm open-jaw spanner and locked with pin T10060 A so the belt can be slipped off the alternator pulley. The DF connector and the B+ cable come off, the two securing bolts are removed and the alternator is lifted out. The belt is where this job goes wrong: mark its top side and running direction before removal, because a used belt refitted the wrong way round will be destroyed. On refit the threaded sleeves are driven back about 4 mm to accept the alternator.
🧭 Before you start
Disconnect the battery, remove the dipstick and engine cover, lock the belt tensioner and take the belt off the alternator. Disconnect the DF connector and B+ cable, remove the two securing bolts and lift the alternator out. Before fitting, drive the threaded sleeves back, then tighten to specification, fit the belt in its marked direction and reconnect the battery. Run the engine and check the belt tracks correctly.
Fits: VW Sharan I / SEAT Alhambra (7M)
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
Don't miss
- Mark the top side and running direction of the poly V-belt before removal.
- Lock the tensioner with pin T10060 A before taking the belt off.
- Drive the alternator threaded sleeves back about 4 mm before installation.
- With air conditioning, fit the belt over the compressor pulley last; without, over the alternator pulley.
- Start the engine and check the belt runs correctly in all pulleys.

📋 Procedure
- Disconnect battery .
- ⚠ Before removing, mark the top side and direction of rotation of the poly V-belt. When installing, ensure correct fitting position and direction of rotation. If the belt is installed in the wrong position or against direction of rotation, the belt will be destroyed! — Pull out engine oil dipstick (1).
- Remove engine cover (2) from securing points, by first pulling upwards (arrows A) then pull forwards (arrow B).
- Swing poly V-belt tensioner in (direction of arrow) using a 16 mm open-jaw spanner.
- Lock tensioning device with locking pin T10060 A
- Remove poly V-belt from alternator belt pulley.
- Release and disconnect DF cable connector (1) and pull off protective cap (2).
- Remove securing nut (3).
- Open wiring retainer (1) and remove B+ cable (2) from alternator.
- Remove both securing bolts (arrows) and remove alternator upwards from vehicle.
- ⚠ When installing used poly-V-belts observe the direction of rotation marked on removal! Before installing poly V-belt, ensure that all ancillaries (alternator, air conditioning compressor) are secure. When fitting belt, ensure that poly V-belt seats correctly in pulleys! — Drive threaded sleeves (A) about 4 mm in (direction of arrow) out of alternator housing.
- Tighten threaded connections to specified torques . [Note: Observe following notes when fitting belt:Vehicles with an air conditioner compressor, place poly V-belt over air conditioner compressor belt pulley last.Vehicles with no air conditioner compressor, place poly V-belt over alternator belt pulley last.]
- ⚠ Observe notes for battery pole terminal clamp bolt . — Reconnect battery .
- Start engine and check belt is running correctly.
- Switch off engine.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
