Removing and installing alternator, 1.4 l, 90 kW TSI engine — VW

Removing and installing alternator, 1.4 l, 90 kW TSI engine on VW: 17 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Changing the alternator on the Golf Cabriolet (517, 2011–2016) with the 1.4 TSI 90 kW involves moving the air conditioning compressor out of the way, and the alternator then leaves downwards. Up top, the activated charcoal filter is unclipped and set aside with its hoses connected, the poly V-belt comes off and the upper alternator bolt is removed. From below, with the noise insulation off, the wiring retainer, protective cap, DF connector and battery positive wire are removed. The compressor's three bolts come out and it is suspended on wire under the car, hoses still attached, before the lower alternator bolt is undone. On refit, the threaded sleeves are driven about 4 mm out of the alternator housing, and a used belt must go back in its marked running direction.

17 steps

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the battery, move the charcoal filter aside, remove the belt and the upper alternator bolt. Remove the noise insulation, disconnect the DF connector and B+ wire, unbolt the AC compressor and hang it on wire. Remove the lower bolt and lower the alternator out. Drive the threaded sleeves out about 4 mm, refit everything, tighten the cable retainer in the 9 o'clock position, torque to the assembly overview and start up to check the belt.

Fits: VW Golf Cabriolet (517, 2011–2016)

Don't miss

  • Suspend the AC compressor on wire with its hoses connected but not stretched or kinked.
  • Drive threaded sleeves (A) about 4 mm out of the alternator housing before fitting.
  • Refit a used poly V-belt in the running direction marked on removal.
  • Tighten the cable retainer on the alternator rear in the 9 o'clock position.
  • Check all driven units are mounted correctly before fitting the belt.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
