Measuring and marking radial run-out on propshaft flange: VW Phaeton
Step-by-step measuring and marking radial run-out on propshaft flange for the VW Phaeton: 10 steps, 1 torque figure.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Phaeton (3D)
- Special tools named: dial gauge
- Renewed: bolts for propshaft
Don't miss
- Make a coloured mark at the point of greatest radial run-out along outside of flange (corresponds to greatest distance from axis of rotation).
- If necessary, remove old marking (B) from flange.
- Always renew bolts for propshaft.
- The marks may only be offset a maximum of 30° to one another.
- Brace propshaft with counterhold tool T10172 to prevent it from turning.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | First tighten propshaft |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Disconnect propshaft from rear final drive and tie up or support.
- Set up measuring tools.
- Set dial gauge to zero with 1 mm preload and position on machined surface in flange.
- Turn both rear wheels in the same direction at the same time so that the propshaft rotates one complete rotation.
- Make a coloured mark at the point of greatest radial run-out along outside of flange (corresponds to greatest distance from axis of rotation).
- If necessary, remove old marking (B) from flange.
- Always renew bolts for propshaft.
- Fit propshaft with markings (A) and (B) facing one another. [Note: The marks may only be offset a maximum of 30° to one another.]
- Brace propshaft with counterhold tool T10172 to prevent it from turning.
- First tighten propshaft to 10 Nm, then to specified torque . — 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
