Installing gearbox, Jetta 2011 — VW
Installing gearbox, Jetta 2011 on VW: 37 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Refitting the gearbox to the engine on the Jetta of 2011 (platform code 162) is covered here, from transferring brackets off the old unit through to drive shafts, exhaust and wheels. Before the box goes on, the crankshaft needle bearing is renewed, the two dowel sleeves and the intermediate plate are checked, and the right flange shaft is taken off. The gearbox is then aligned on its support, slid on with the crank turned slightly if the splines will not engage, and bolted up. The jobs that bite are the left gearbox mounting, where the bracket and support arm must sit perfectly parallel before the bolts are started or the thread strips, and the selector lever cable, which needs a new securing clip, correct routing and adjustment afterwards.
🧭 Before you start
Prepare the gearbox and engine, align and install the box without trapping lines, and bolt it to the engine. Fit the gearbox console and bracket, raise the unit until the bracket contacts the mounting and tighten the new mounting bolts. Then refit starter, selector cable, right flange shaft, battery tray, air filter housing, drive shafts, heat shield, pendulum support on new bolts, exhaust, wheel housing liner, noise insulation and plenum cover, and reconnect the battery.
Fits: VW Jetta VI (16, 2010–2018)
- Renewed: oil seal for flange shaft
Don't miss
- Renew the crankshaft needle bearing every time engine and gearbox are separated; a damaged one stops gears selecting properly.
- Renew bolts (1) and (2) for the left assembly mounting and start them only with bracket and support arm parallel.
- Leave support bar 10-222 A in place until both assembly mountings are tightened to specification.
- Use a new securing clip on the selector lever Bowden cable, route it correctly and adjust it.
- After fitting the starter, confirm both gearbox breather caps are in place.
- Pendulum support bolts are renewed; follow the after-battery-connection routine at the end.

📋 Procedure
- In some cases, there are brackets on the front of the removed gearbox. Attach these brackets to the »new« gearbox.
- Remove right-hand flange shaft in order to install gearbox.
- Renew needle bearing in crankshaft (arrow) if this has not already been done 13Crankshaft; Renewing needle bearing in crankshaft. [Note: Always renew the needle bearing (arrow) after separating engine and gearbox. If the needle bearing in the crankshaft is damaged, the gears cannot be selected properly anymore.]
- Check for proper seating of both dowel sleeves between engine and gearbox.
- Check for proper seating of intermediate plate.
- Guide selector lever cable as soon as possible into its cable support bracket.
- Readjust gearbox support until engine and gearbox are »aligned with each other«.
- Turn crankshaft slightly if necessary.
- Install gearbox, taking care not to pinch any lines.
- Tighten gearbox to engine.
- Remove gearbox support3282 from gearbox.
- Renew bolts (1) and (2) for left assembly mounting.
- Install gearbox console between gearbox and support arm of gearbox mounting.
- First, bolt gearbox bracket to gearbox using securing bolts (1).
- Then align engine and gearbox in installation position. To do this, lift up sufficiently until gearbox bracket is fully in contact with gearbox mounting.
- ⚠ Risk of damaging thread in gearbox bracket if bolts are started at an angle. Before screwing in the bolts (2), gearbox bracket and support arm of gearbox mounting must be perfectly aligned parallel to each other. If necessary, raise the back of the gearbox using the engine and gearbox jack. — Then, tighten bolts (2) to specified torque.
- ⚠ Do not remove support bar10 - 222 A until all bolts securing the left and right assembly mountings have been tightened to specified torque. — Securing clip for selector lever Bowden cable (arrow) must be renewed.
- Therefore, when installing, always use a »new« securing clip.
- Ensure that selector lever cable is properly routed during installation (arrow).
- Observe heat shield. Press it back up in the tunnel during installation.
- Install starter Electrical system27Starter; Removing and installing starter.
- After fitting starter motor, check that both breather caps are in place (arrows)!
- Always adjust selector lever cable .
- Mount right flange shaft back on gearbox . [Note: There is no need to renew oil seal for flange shaft when doing this.]
- Install battery tray and battery Electrical system27Battery; Removing and installing battery.
- Install complete air filter housing:
- Attach drive shafts to gearbox Running gear, axles, steering40Removing and installing drive shafts.
- If previously removed, secure swivel joint back to suspension link Running gear, axles, steering40Assembly overview - front suspension, suspension link.
- If removed, install heat shield above right drive shaft Running gear, axles, steering40Repairing drive shafts - overview of drive shafts.
- Secure pendulum support to gearbox and subframe using new bolts Running gear, axles, steering40Assembly overview - subframe.
- Assemble exhaust system, and secure exhaust system bracket to subframe 26Exhaust system or 26Parts of exhaust system.
- Install front left wheel housing liner General body repairs, exterior66Wheel housing liner; Assembly overview - front wheel housing liner.
- Install noise insulation General body repairs, exterior50Noise insulation; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Install plenum chamber cover General body repairs, exterior50Plenum chamber cover; Removing and installing plenum chamber cover.
- Tighten bolts (arrows) for lock carrier retaining bracket on left and right to specified torque General body repairs, exterior50Lock carrier; Lock carrier - attachments.
- Connect battery and follow procedure after connecting battery Electrical system27Disconnecting and connecting battery.
- Install wheel Running gear, axles, steering44Torque settings for mounting wheels.

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
