Installing gearbox, Golf, Golf Estate — VW

Installing gearbox, Golf, Golf Estate on VW: 68 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.

Refitting the manual gearbox on the Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020) and Golf VII Variant (BA5) is a two-person underbody job built around the engine support 3300 A, the assembly tool T10519 and the gearbox support 3282 on an engine and gearbox jack. The engine is pushed forward, the gearbox is tilted on its spindles so the flange shafts clear the dowel sleeve and subframe bracket, and it is swung round the intermediate plate onto the engine. After that comes a long refit list: mounting, pendulum support, exhaust, driveshafts, starter, slave cylinder, selector cables, battery and air filter. What decides it is clean threads and new self-locking bolts, and an intermediate plate that is still correctly seated when the two halves meet.

68 steps 1 torque figure

🧭 Before you start

Chase old locking compound from threaded holes, check dowel sleeves and intermediate plate, and grease the input shaft splines lightly. Bolt T10519 to engine and subframe at 20 Nm, fit the support, push the engine forward and bring the gearbox up on the jack, tilting it to guide the flange shafts past the dowel sleeve and subframe. Bolt engine and gearbox together, fit the mounting free of tension, then refit pendulum support, exhaust, driveshafts, wiring, starter, slave cylinder and selector cables. Adjust the selector mechanism and refit trim, battery and air filter; check headlight adjustment where a level sender is fitted.

Fits: VW Golf VII Variant (BA), VW Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020)

  • Renewed: self-locking bolts

Don't miss

  • Renew self-locking bolts and nuts and chase every threaded hole clean before fitting.
  • Make sure the intermediate plate is correctly seated; reshape it if it gets bent during fitting.
  • Leave support bracket 10 - 222 A in place until all mounting bolts are torqued.
  • Renew the selector cable securing clip and adjust the selector mechanism afterwards.
  • Do not open the air conditioning or fuel filter pipe systems; just clip them back in.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. All threaded holes into which self-locking bolts are to be screwed must be carefully cleaned of residual locking fluid using a thread chaser.
  2. Always renew self-locking bolts and nuts after removing.
  3. Check whether dowel sleeves for aligning engine and gearbox are fitted in cylinder block and install if necessary.
  4. Ensure that intermediate plate is correctly seated on engine.
  5. Clean input shaft splines and apply thin coat of grease for clutch plate splines.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
