Timing chain replacement: VW Eos 1F 2.0 TFSi camshaft (BWA)
Step-by-step timing chain replacement for the VW Eos 1F 2.0 TFSi camshaft (BWA): 89 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This covers the camshaft chain on the VW Eos (1F) with the BWA 2.0 TFSI engine. The chain links the two camshafts at the head, with the camshaft adjuster unit and a hydraulic tensioner. Getting to it means removing the vacuum pump, breather pipes, coolant hose and harness brackets, the upper timing belt cover and the camshaft cover, and depressurising the high-pressure fuel circuit with a diagnostic tool. The engine is turned clockwise to TDC on cylinder 1, the camshaft timing marks are aligned and the camshafts locked. The tensioner piston is pushed back and pinned before the adjuster and chain come off with the gearwheel. Refit is by the marks, with new bolts tightened in stages, and the alignment checked again after turning the crankshaft slowly clockwise.
🧭 Before you start
Disconnect the battery, depressurise the fuel system and remove the vacuum pump, breather pipes, harness brackets, upper belt cover and camshaft cover. Set the engine to TDC cylinder 1 turning clockwise, align and lock the camshafts, then pin the chain tensioner and remove the adjuster and chain with its gearwheel. Fit the chain to the gearwheels by the marks, refit the adjuster with new bolts in two stages, remove the locking pin, turn the crankshaft slowly clockwise and recheck the timing.
Fits: platform codes 2.0, TFSI
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: locking pin
Don't miss
- Always turn the engine clockwise when setting TDC and checking timing.
- Depressurise the high-pressure fuel system before disconnecting anything on it.
- Lock the tensioner with a locking pin before removing the chain.
- Use new bolts where specified and tighten them in stages.
- Recheck camshaft alignment after turning the crankshaft; repeat the procedure if it is not correct.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
