🧭 Before you start

Fits: VW Passat B6 (3C, 2005–2010)

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Special tools named: 27 mm open-end spanner
  • Renewed: camshaft adjuster

Don't miss

  • Set crankshaft to TDC No. 1 Cyl. marks by turning crankshaft on the vibration damper securing bolt in engine direction of rotation (arrow).
  • Due to a fitted key, camshaft adjusters can only be bolted on in one position (arrows) at camshaft mounting.
  • If inlet camshaft adjuster is bolted to the camshaft, turn adjuster with chain sprocket to left accordingly and then fit camshaft timing chain.
  • Insert exhaust camshaft adjuster »32A« into camshaft timing chain. Previously counted 16 rollers must lie between teeth at arrow markings »24E« and »32A«.
  • A slight offset between marking (1) and notch (2) is permissible.

📋 Procedure

  1. Set crankshaft to TDC No. 1 Cyl. marks by turning crankshaft on the vibration damper securing bolt in engine direction of rotation (arrow).
  2. Set camshafts in cylinder head to TDC for No. 1 cylinder .
  3. Insert camshaft bar T10068 A in both shaft grooves. If necessary, move the camshafts back and forth slightly with an open-end spanner.
  4. Secure position of high-pressure pump drive sprocket using adjusting tool T10363. The marking (A) on the drive cam for high-pressure pump must be on top. [Note: Due to a fitted key, camshaft adjusters can only be bolted on in one position (arrows) at camshaft mounting.]
  5. Check TDC position of crankshaft.

  1. Turn sender wheel (1) on removed inlet camshaft adjuster to right stop. Hold adjuster in this position. [Note: If inlet camshaft adjuster is bolted to the camshaft, turn adjuster with chain sprocket to left accordingly and then fit camshaft timing chain.]
  2. Connect inlet camshaft adjuster with fitted timing chain onto camshaft. Observe the following:
  3. From the tooth which aligns with the arrow (1) and the notch (2), now count exactly 16 rollers to the right on the timing chain. Mark this roller with a coloured pen. [Note: The exhaust camshaft adjuster is locked when »at rest«. This prevents the sender wheel from turning when adjusting the valve timing. If the locking mechanism is not engaged (locked) when »at rest«, turn the adjuster in both directions by hand until it is locked. If this is not possible, renew camshaft adjuster.]
  4. Insert exhaust camshaft adjuster »32A« into camshaft timing chain. Previously counted 16 rollers must lie between teeth at arrow markings »24E« and »32A«.
  5. Connect camshaft adjuster »32A« with camshaft timing chain onto exhaust camshaft. Observe the following: [Note: A slight offset between marking (1) and notch (2) is permissible.]
  6. Remove setting tool T10363 from bearing shaft.
  7. Remove camshaft bar T10068 A.
  8. Install chain tensioner for timing chain and tighten to 50 ± 2 Nm. — 2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  9. Turn engine two revolutions in direction of engine rotation and check valve timing .
  10. Hold camshaft which is to be tightened using a 27 mm open-end spanner (arrow). [Note: Camshaft bar T10068 A must be removed while this is done.Note that all sprocket securing bolts must be renewed.]
  11. Tighten securing bolts of inlet and exhaust camshaft adjusters to 60 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°) further. — 60 Nm (44 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
